Gibberish on the page
Feb 06, 2008 | 7:59AM
Shrinkthelink.com

It rel="nofollow"shouldn't really be like this, but I find it is.

If your webpage provides genuinely useful information, people don't click any ads. They start browsing your site.

If you write a load of semi-gibberish nonsense (but not spam), the users attentions wanes, and they start clicking adverts if you place them correctly.

I've a CTR of as much as 40% on utterly useless (info wise) pages that are full of hand written nonsense. Other pages that provide fantastic advice have a CTR of just 1 or 2%. Fair enough I won't attract much respect, but when it comes to making money online, it's all about clicks.

So my tip would be that the less useful information you provide, the higher your CTR will be.

MAD but true.

How to successfully market your website
Jan 27, 2008 | 7:00PM
How does a online marketer gets his site to rank high in the search engines ? That's a question alot of marketers ask themselves everyday.Online marketing is successful when tackled from several angles. You may be asking yourselves , what are some of these strategies that I can use ? Well here are some that have been proven to work very well

(1) Meta Tags – These are very important especially the title and description tags which can give your rankings a major boost. Some search engines don't consider them that relevant , but still use them.

(2) Optimization - The vast majority of websites on the Net are not properly optimized for the search engines. When your site is optimized ,you are sure to see a boost in your rankings.Make this a vital part of your marketing campaign.

(3) Link Popularity - With link popularity , your website will stand out more in the crowd.Almost every search engine especially Google use this as a part of their ranking system. The trick is to try to get quality links from similar sites to yours.Finding these websites may be difficult but well worth the effort.

(4) Mindset - This is IT , The big one !!. Without the proper mindset , all your marketing efforts will not amount to much. You have to deeply believe that there is someone bigger than you looking out for you.And you must believe in yourself and your ability to succeed. When you can do this, then you are on the road to success.

mistakes newbies make in the affiliate game
Apr 28, 2007 | 7:43AM

Generally, I manage affiliate programs using PPC methods, so that's the basis of my experience. What common mistakes do enthusiastic newbies make? Here are a few.

1. Minimal keyword research. You wonder why there are no clicks. Do the work in the beginning to create a kick butt keyword list!

2. Bid way too much and drain your budget. You then declare your campaign a failure. At first, high bids work, but watch your campaigns closely. Adjust bids accordingly.

3. Test ONLY ONE thing at a time. Think of it like a controlled experiment. Start testing different ads with one landing page. Next, try to establish a good ctr. Then, if possible, a good conversion rate.

4. Once you have an ad that performs... test different landing pages so you know the best converting one.

5. Continue keyword research. Look through your weblogs...you'll find diamonds in the rough. Use the same technique to find negative keywords. These are keywords you want to avoid for your ad! If you have a big list of negative keywords, it may mean the difference between a successful campain and a failure.

software-as-a-service

More and more, businesses are becoming open to externalizing anything not a core part of their business.* Let's say a company sells cooking grills. It no longer has employees, or department, handling email.

They contact 'Turnkey Enterprise iSolutions Ltd.' which handles everything email for $5 per address**, per month. After all, this company sells grill (their core business) not manage emails. Why worry about server mainteinance, create user accounts, schedule backups, or handle spam? The executive simply wants to make better grills and sell them to more people.

So, let's say email-as-a-service is proposed. Let's say the grill company (GrillCo) needs 400 email accounts. Since they do not buy email servers, or hire spam gurus, there's no large, initial investment. They test it with one department (accounting). If the ten people in accounting like it, they expand it to everyone's email. This eliminates risk for the buyer.

Now, is this a better way? Truthfully, anyone willing to provide a definitive answer, either way, is crazy. It may work for some situations, it may not work for others. There is a reason these are discussed, and may become more and more popular. Simply, for better or worse, cost-cutting is highly rewarded at the executive level. If you run a publicly-listed company, and do not appear to be "cost-oriented", you raise suspicions among the board of directors, shareholders, and Wall Street.^

* Whether or not this is true I don't know, but that's what they are proposing.

** I'm picking a number out of thin air.

^ I'm not saying it's good, simply largely how it is.

web realities
Apr 07, 2006 | 8:47PM

The entire web is an advertisement.

Think of the web as a magazine, or TV, or life. Websites are the content, like articles, or TV shows. Corporate websites, promotion websites, are advertising - like magazine ads or TV commercials. E-commerce and banking websites are the transaction centers of the web.

Banner ads are one form of advertising. Focusing on them in a "web advertising" article is no different than assuming the only form of "real-world" advertising are billboards. Banner ads use power words like "FREE" due to limited screen real-estate. Those words are very powerful and are proven to receive significant attention.

Websites, on the other hand, are like a 2-page spread in a magazine. All the room to sell with compelling copy is available. Banners are like a billboard. It has to sell in 3 seconds. The quickest way to do that is to grab attention. While you don't want to hit people over the head to do it, you have to find a way. Otherwise, your banner fails.
