Baby, you can drive my car
Oct 08, 2005 | 8:10PM

I live in LA, which is famous not just for its celebrities, but also its traffic.  It's the only city in the world where people consider needing to drive more than 2 miles to work a commute because it will probably take 30+ minutes, and that's only if you avoid rush hour.

Lately, Lex has been expressing disbelief that we (people) are still driving cars at all.  He thinks technology should have already allowed for cars to drive themselves.  I'd imagine that the right to privacy activists will probably fight this one off for a while; if the cars are driving themselves, then somewhere there is a computer that will know where we are going at all times.  Fortunately for Lex, The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is leading the way in the development of autonomous vehichles - and paying quite a pretty penny for it.  I knew I should have gone to MIT.

As I don't drive, I would love a car that drove itself - then I wouldnt have to have the weird people sitting next to me on the bus!.

Never mind cars that drive themselves, I wanna drive a hover-car in the air, like on the Jetsons! ;-)

Actually, back in New York we had a little something that performed the tasks of a motor vehicle without requiring you to drive. We called them "subways" and they worked wonderfully. For the price of one dollar and change, you could ride from Coney Island all the way to Queens, through every part of Manhattan. Ohhh, what a wonderous piece of technology, that. Of course we need no such thing in Los Angeles, naturally. Oh, we can use city funds to build it, but nooo... can't let something like that be practical in a city like Los Angeles. No sirree!

Sorry, this is an endless source of frustration for both me and the missus.
