Done with Domiguez

I never have to take another class at CSU-Dominguez Hills again!  As of Thursday at around 7:45 pm, I officially finished all of the coursework required to obtain my California Level I Special Education (Mild/Moderate) teaching credential AND my Masters Degree in Special Education - Mild/Moderate Disabilities.  Although I'm not 100% through with the school yet - there's still paperwork to be filed and the Masters' exam in April - I never have to sit through another 3 hour torture session again.

 I feel great.

The odd part is that I have been taking classes nonstop for the last two and half years.  My life has been characterized by working full time and taking 4 classes.  I haven't had my evenings to myself on a regular basis in a long time.  What will I do with all of that free time?  Hone my TV watching skills?  Take up birdwatching?  Experiment with my home grown nuclear reactor?  Finally finish my intergalaxy telephone?

Maybe I'll start writing this blog again...

Guess who's back?
Oct 16, 2005 | 10:19AM

Hi.  You many not remember me.  My name is Lauren.  I used to have a blog around here, but some time during the last two weeks I fell off the face of the earth.

Actually, I didn't fall off the face of the earth (although the two earthquakes we had last weekend made me seriously think I was going to).  It's just that during the last two weeks I finally felt the effects of being seriously over-committed.  Apparently, working as a full-time teacher, taking four graduate classes, attending physical therapy three times a week, attending regular therapy once a week, and being married with a dog doesn't leave you a lot of time for blogging.  Who woulda thunk it? Smiley

The Circle of Blogs
Sep 20, 2005 | 10:41PM

I looked over my blog today, and it seems my favorite thing to blog about is my blog . . . Hmmm.  A little Escher, anyone?

Word of the Day:

remedy      1. (noun) - a medicine or treatment used for healing

                2. (verb) - to return something to its proper condition

Is it confusing that a remedy can be used to remedy???

Five things I SHOULD be doing instead of blogging
Sep 19, 2005 | 7:26PM

I totally shouldn't be blogging right now.

I should be:

1.  Writing two "abstracts" for research articles about transition from special education to employment, especially since they're due tomorrow undefined

2.   Paying my bills

3.   Learning from my mistakes, as I lost this blog post the first time (again!!!)

4.   Going to the gym

5.   Finding ways to make my life more interesting, since judging from the above, I'm really boring

Word of the Day:

vanquish (verb)  - to defeat; overcome

When is it too much?
Sep 17, 2005 | 8:48PM

Has anybody opened a magazine recently and suddenly found it talking to you?  In an effort to be even more annoying and obnoxious, the networks have started advertising by putting recorded ads that are programmed to play when you open up to that page into magazines.  Call me crazy, but when I open a magazine, I expect to read it, not hear it.  Between print ads, perfume ads, and now these tv ads, magazine reading is on its way to becoming a full multisensory experience.  Now if they could just slap a masseuse and a Hershey bar in there, I'd be all set.

THERE IS A SILVER LINING TO THIS THUNDERCLOUD!  After hearing "My Name is Earl" about 6 times in the span of 30 seconds, Lex ripped one of these lovely enchantments out of this week's Entertainment Weekly and unceremoniously threw it on the floor.  Noticing the contraption that looked like a mini mother board, I picked it up and started trying to take it apart.  I found that by using a pen and its cap, I could remove all three of those little round batteries you get for watches.  FREE BATTERIES!  Woohoo!  Totally worth it, don't you think? Smiley

Things that will never be #2
Sep 17, 2005 | 8:35PM

I have once again found myself victim of the unpredictable, unforgiving beast, commonly known as the Internet.  I tried to post the "Last time I laughed, Last time I cried" topic twice.  The first time was my fault - damn browser settings! - but the second time was because Grab asked me to verify my email address AGAIN!  Perhaps this is Fate's way of telling me that nobody really needed to read about the little boy watching the video and the time I hit myself in the mouth with the yardstick.  Or maybe this is a wake up call that I need to learn to learn from my mistakes (see Things that will never be #1).  Well, fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.  Or something like that.

Oh, and sorry, there's no Word of the Day today.  No school, no words.  Monday, I promise.

I'm blue Smiley

No, not that kind of blue.  My blog is blue!!!!!!!  I am the happiest of campers.  I love blue, and there can never be too much blue.  It makes nice sweaters, nice couches, nice bedspreads, nice candy, nice paint colors, nice flowers, nice everything.  I like to have blue in everything I do.  It took a lot of effort on my part to expand my wardrobe beyond blue, but with convincing I did, though I still keep blue as the majority.  The Gal Pals tried to change me, but at heart I'm still true blue.

The Inspiration
Sep 08, 2005 | 10:58PM
At last, I have decided on a name for my blog.  I abandoned a variety of permutations of my name, and took Lex's advice to reference a song.  Though not a huge fan of Blues Traveler, I love the imagery and message John Popper creates through these lyrics.  Plus, kudos for using the word poignant!

Get it?
Sep 05, 2005 | 9:14PM

I like to reference movies, literature, and pop culture whenever possible, but sometimes I realize that this is only for my own benefit.  However, I would like to allow others to gain from this hobby of mine, so I will give FIVE HUNDRED MILLION GRABBLES to anyone who can identify what I was referencing by the title of my previous post.

DISCLAIMER:  The authorizing party of the Name-The-Reference-In-My-Blog-Grabble-Giveaway does not work for Grab in any way, shape, or form.  Payment will be made in the form of imaginary grabbles.  Imaginary grabbles are non-transferrable and cannot be applied to raffles, karma, bank accounts, or anything else because they are imaginary.  Duh.

You have chosen...wisely
Sep 05, 2005 | 9:19AM

It's been awhile since my last blog post, and I'd like to blame it on going out of town twice, having my family come visit, going back to work, and going back to school.  I'd also like to blame it on sunspots, the greenhouse effect, and insurgent groups in the Congo.  But despite the many excuses I could generate, the truth is I have been avoiding the task once again, mostly because I was unable to settle on a topic.

What is it that makes people vary so much on the spectrum of  decisiveness?  There are definitely some people who always know what they want.  These people are annoying; they never let me pick which movie to rent.  Then there are the people who can't seem to decide anything.  I often wonder how they survive without someone helping them choose when to breathe.  I clearly fall on the indecisive end of the scale, though I seem to be able to make a few decisions for myself - I totally picked my own outfit this morning, though I think my neighbors were annoyed when I knocked on all of their doors to get approval.

I think I am going to start a new campaign:  Pro-Choice.  No, it has nothing to do with that ever popular abortion debate that riles the fundamentalists and feminists alike.  Oh no, my friends, I am going to start lobbying for choices to be made by all.  That's right, I am Pro-Making-Choices.  Indecisive-ists, beware!  Your days are numbered!  I'll have 6 senators and an evangelist on my side by the end of the week.  Now, if I only I could decide whether to use email or phone...or letters...or picket signs...or...
