Pet Peeves
Sep 07, 2005 | 12:08PM
Long weekend is over, didn't really do much over it... brought Todd up to Santa Barbara for the weekend, so hubby could play house-husband while I worked on some stuff on campus. We had a lot of fun playing family with our little man in our apartment :-D
I thought about doing another quiz and posting the results here, but I couldn't really find an interesting one (or one that's appropriate for Grab ;-)). I'll just have to wait and see what my other blogging friends come up with, and continue the meme that way :-)
Meantime, I thought I'd write about my pet peeves. There's been a number of threads in Grab Bag on this subject, and each time, I've always said pretty much the same thing-- so I thought, "Why not consolidate them into my blog?" Also, we've had the "I Love" meme... why not make a list of things I don't love? ;-) So here goes...
Things that annoy Helly to no end:
Some traffic-related ones: 1. People who don't use turn signals in traffic
2. People who use turn signals, but then forget to turn them OFF once they've changed lanes
3. People who cruise in the passing lane. There's nothing more frustrating than trying to pass a slow car in the right lane-- only to have an equally-slow car blocking your attempts in the left lane! In Germany, cruising in the passing lane is a big no-no. I'm not sure if it's actually illegal or not, but it's certainly frowned down upon big time!
4. Drivers on cell phones. In Germany (and maybe other parts of Europe), it is illegal to talk on cell phones (unless using "hands-free" sets) while driving. You could get charged with a whopper of a fine if caught. I hope that the US follows suit with similar laws soon. It's not only annoying to be near a car that (at best) is traveling too slow but dangerous when driving by a car that is (at worst) swerving from lane to lane because the driver is yapping away on a cell phone. These drivers are no safer than drunk drivers-- they don't focus all their attention where it needs to be-- on the road. Hands-free sets are there for a reason. Use them.
5. Rubberneckers (a.k.a. looky-loos) It boggles the mind how an accident on ONE side of the freeway manages to clog up traffic on BOTH sides.
6. People who can't park properly. Especially when parking spots are hard to come by. Especially when a bleepin' behemoth SUV or truck takes up 1.5 spots, causing a chain reaction of cars that are likewise parked stupidly!
7. Daytime running lights. Whoever thought up that they would be "safer" was sadly mistaken. Today's cars come equipped with headlights bright enough to fry your eyeballs. Have you ever had a car with "daytime running lights" approach you from the opposite direction? Yes, it's true that you're able to see the car coming from farther away. But as you get closer, those darn things can blind you-- even in broad daylight. How is that supposed to enhance safety?
Others: 8. Misspelling the word "ensure" as "insure". I swear, if I had a penny for every time I've seen this particular error, I could retire in the Bahamas right now. The thing that cracks me up is that the Preamble to our Constitution also misspells it this way: "... to insure domestic tranquility..." I wonder if our Founding Fathers had any inkling of what the premiums on such insurance would eventually cost? ;-)
9. Cashiers who chat with customers they personally know. It's one thing to have a brief greeting exchange, but it really irks me when they start having an entire conversation that slows the cashier down in his/her work, and holds the rest of us up! If you want to talk to your friend, do so during your break, don't delay the rest of us just because you want to yap at your friend!
10. Getting change from cashiers. Ah yes, the age-old peeve. Cashiers, it's a consensus: change first, then bills on top. Please.
11. People who "shout" by WRITING IN ALL CAPS. If you don't want to bother with proper capitalization, just write in all lowercase. It's much easier on the eyes, and it's NOT SHOUTING :-P
(a sidenote: after typing this all up, I couldn't help but notice how I have more traffic/vehicle-related peeves. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. Is this why Americans seem to be so consumed with road rage out there? Hmmmm...)

Hmmm... another bio section! Let's see... what could I possibly say that's new/different from stuff you could read in my profile?
Well, I'm a happy Grabber who became addicted to blogging as soon as Grab blogs came out. I hope you enjoy my musings, boring stories of my life, memes and random quiz results :-)
Thanks for reading, and have a great day!
