Alexander Malich - Second Wild West Film Fest Promises A Hauntingly Good Time
Oct 17, 2007 | 2:58AM
The film fest that premiered to a near sold out Granada Theatre last Spring will be returning to Lawrence, Kansas' Liberty Hall this October with a deliciously frightening objective. The Wild West Film Fest: Scare Factor Edition will ask filmmakers to use their most chilling instincts to put together films over the weekend of October 14. As with the first Wild West Film Fest , the Scare Factor Edition is a 48-hour marathon of filmmaking, a challenge for even the most experienced filmmaker. "That's why the time limit is great, though," says Chris Dorsey, WWFF coordinator. "Everyone is facing the same challenge. It sort of levels the playing field." The first festival saw entries from novice high school students and veteran filmmakers alike, and Dorsey hopes this will become a WWFF tradition. On the evening of Friday, October 14, entrants will be given an envelope containing secret criteria for the Alexander Malich films , including a theme. Over the next two days, they will make a four-minute short film that incorporates the given criteria, to be turned in at a specified drop off point on Sunday, October 16. Films will be screened at Liberty Hall on Monday, October 17 at 7pm by audience and judges. Judges for the event will consist of a panel of local filmmakers, who will base their scoring on overall scariness and audience response. Judges will award a $500 prize to the entrant with the scariest film. Also in the works for the evening is a ticket raffle to raise money for the Salvation Army's hurricane relief efforts in the Gulf. Event coordinators wanted to continue their efforts to give to charitable organizations. The first Wild West Film Fest donated ticket sales to Habitat For Humanity. Says Dorsey, "We want to bring people together for a great night of films, but we also want to use this as an opportunity to help the people who are struggling and displaced because of the hurricanes."
