Vanilla Ice Cream

Vanilla Ice Cream

Today I went to the grocery store to get some vanilla ice cream to go with dessert for me and my family. My sisters Wendy, Rachel and I were all in the ice cream section when we realized...there were more then one kind of vanilla ice cream. Some examples are...1905 vanilla, french vanilla, homemade vanilla, vanilla bean and then regular vanilla. Now my question is...what is the difference between them all? And why do we need so many different kinds of the same thing? Its not like chocolate ice cream where you have different types...but you know they are different flavors too. This it just seems like different names..how is french vanilla any differnt then homemade vanilla?

Hey at least we never get bored. You are a great friend and always fun to talk to. However...you really need to start changing Tessa...her diaper is getting a little dirty. Language Barrier

Language Barrier

Today, like every day, I thought of something random that had absolutely nothing to do with what I was doing at the time. Normal people would call this a fluke, but for me, it has quite a bit of normalosity to it. Anyway, the topic which I pondered this time was communication between people who speak different languages. This is a very familiar subject to a lot of us, especially here in Texas.

Speaking a language common to those around you is important, obviously because of the potential communication problems which exist without a set language. When people speak different languages, and try to communicate with one another, they exude idiocy to a great extent.

Take the situation in which an English-speaking person attempts to talk to a person of a different language. No offense, but it's usually the English-speaking person who comes off as being an idiot. He/She will first attempt to speak louder and slower, but still in English, as if the only problem was that they were talking too fast. Then they will attempt to make up words in that person's language.

Observe the following common conversation to find out why I make this claim.

{SESP - Silly English Speaking Person}
{DLSP - Differnet Language Speaking Person}

SESP: Hi sir, do you know how to get to Highway 59 from here?
DLSP: ...
SESP: Hello? Sir? How do I get to 59?
DLSP: Uhhh... no speak English...
SESP: OH, you don't speak English!?
DLSP: SI! No speak English.
SESP: Ok... here we go... HOW... DO... IIIII... GET... TO FIFTY-NINE... FROM HERE...?
DLSP: ...no speak English...
SESP: Ok... ummm... How-o... do I get-o... to cinco-nine... from right here-o?
DLSP: ...no comprendo (Translation: I dont understand). [laughs.] Tu eres estupido. (Translation: You are stupid)
SESP: HELLO! ANSWER ME IN ENGLISH!

Math Class
Nov 22, 2005 | 5:17PM

Math class

Math class is definitely the most unique of the core classes in college. I have come to this conclusion based upon the experiences I have had and the stereotypes I have made about this incessantly redundant subject. Probably the most accurate way to identify whether or not you are in a math course is if there is the answer-shouter. There is always at least one of these per math classroom. An answer-shouter will constantly be answering aloud the questions the professor/teacher asks, and always before anyone else. See, the answer-shouters (A-S) feel insecure about their knowledge for some reason, and will race for every opportunity to answer a question.

The problem with these people is that they are always wrong. They don't even take a breath before answering, they just seem to blurt out random numbers with accompanying exponents. The A-S also tends to answer the rhetorical questions as well, and more quickly than the rest of the answers, for these questions are the only ones that they aren't guessing on. He/She will become very excited at these type of questions, as it is a perfect opportunity to show the rest of the class how incredibly intelligent he/she is:

PROFESSOR: Why is it six, you ask, Suzanne? Ok, well the rest of it cancels out and then after we carry the two, we add the four to it and then that becomes...
FRANKLIN: SIX! [Looks around the room for approval from his peers. Crosses arms and raises eyebrows.]

These are the same people who ask questions that the teacher answered already. The A-S is just one of the characteristics of math class. Another major one is the type of assignments given. Math is the only class where homework is always due every single day, but never for a grade. "Just do the assignment and we will discuss it in class." This is why the discussions are so dull... nobody does the assignments. The A-S, however, can always keep it going.

The assignments also tend to be "just the odds" or "just the evens". This, unfortunately, confuses the life out of me. At least once a week, I'll come to class with my homework done, and a smile on my face for actually doing it. But to my dismay, I'll look at the board where the assignment from the previous day is written out and find that I did the wrong assignment. "Oh no... does that say evens? I did the ODDS! I could swear she said ODDS yesterday!" Why do they do that "just the evens" junk anyway? If the page has 100 questions on it, but you only want me to do 50 of them, why not make the assignment 1-50...?

Math is also the only subject in which you are required, in most instances, to write down every single little step as to how you reached the answer. What is the purpose of this? If you get the answer right, then why does it matter how you get there?! You never have to do this in any other class. I've never taken a history test which had a question that read "Name the 22nd President of the USA. Show your work."

C.O.P.S.
Nov 22, 2005 | 5:09PM

C.O.P.S.

Today, I was watching C.O.P.S. As I do with most ordinary things, I found excitement in a few observations I made. It seemed as though every single cop on the show was omnipresent. These apparent god-like creatures we call bobbies always tend to have perfect hunches every time. Here's a script of the typical COPS episode:

COP: [Driving in squad car.] Yeah we've never had any kind of questionable activity around this particular area of town I'm heading to, but I've got a feeling that maybe some criminals could be hanging around over there, I'm just gonna head on over there and stick my nose in and peek around. [Pulls into that area of town and spots random car on side of road with nothing fishy about it.] Hmm... a car... on the side of the road... that seems a little fishy, I'm gonna check it out. [To person in car.] Hi, how are you doing today, sir?
GUY (in late 80s, 4'3", extremely nonthreatening, cancer patient and monk): I'm doing fine how are you today?
COP: I'd be doing fine if you'd just step out of the car please.
GUY: Ok, but I don't understand why... ooooh my back!
COP: Here, I'll get your cane out of the backseat... wait a second... speaking of backseats, what are those bags of white powder doing back there?
GUY: Bags of white powder? What bags of white powder?
COP: These bags! This is cocaine!
GUY: It's not mine! I swear! I'm holding it for a friend! I didn't even know what it was!
COP: OK buddy, I'm gonna need you to step out of the car, and put your hands behind your back.
GUY: Over my dead body!!!
[Pulls out gun.]

And of course you know how the rest of the story goes. If the cops on this show are this lucky, then why aren't they in Las Vegas? That's where the real money is. But of course this is not anything like the cops I have seen. The ones around here are more keen to the following scene:

COP: Hey, Bob, look at that... there's a pair of ethnic teenagers with pistols exchanging money and what seems to be a list of people titled "Hit List". Do you think we should check it out?
BOB: Nah, it's probably alright, let's just go get some Whataburger (for those who dont know what this is...it is a fast food place...yes that is the actual name).
COP: You're probably right. Hey, I left my wallet at the house, could you spot me?

There's also that show "Scariest Police Chases" or something like that. If you've ever seen it, then you've surely noticed the gray-haired overdramatic narrator. This guy annoys the crap out of me. He exaggerates every single part of the show to the point of obscenity. Some cop will be pulling a guy over for doing 67 in a 65 and the narrator will say something like "TWENTY SEVEN YEARS OF HARD WORK, TRAINING, AND SELF-DISCIPLINE HAS LED OFFICER BELCHMAKER TO THIS VERY MOMENT!" The guy needs to calm down. As do I...

Movie Villians
Nov 22, 2005 | 4:56PM

Movie Villians

It has come to my attention that the bad guys in movies are really horrible at their jobs. Generally when I am seeing a movie which contains a "bad guy", I will see him completely fail. He will by some means, use his many minions to capture the hero of the movie, reveal himself (for he was hiding), give an evil mischevious laugh right in the face of the hero, and say something to the effect of "I'm better than you." Throughout the movie, we have established the fact that the bad guy wants to kill the good guy REALLY bad. However, oddly enough, the bad guy decides, for some reason, that it is in his best interest to bring him back to his headquarters to kill him there. When they arrive, the villian always must talk for tons of time about why he is killing the hero, and we see the following scene:

Bad Guy: "BWAHAHAHA I've got you now! You cannot escape. Soon you will join he rest of your family that I have already killed. But wait... I do not know how I should go about murdering you. So many ways, so little lives... Shall I bite you to death, use my pistol, cut you with a knife, burn you, or make you watch Teletubbies do the same friggin thing over and over til you kill yourself? Hmmm let me ponder this in my Big Comfy Couch for an hour or two. Oh no you've killed me. Crap... that was unexpected."

Upon realization of this, I have decided to no longer see movies with "Bad Guys" in them. They are only going to remind me of watching the Disney channel when they attempt to make twelve-year old children save the world from some horrible disaster that only he/she knows about and their parents won't listen. And that, my friends... is a whole different kind of bad movie.

Auto Mechanics
Nov 04, 2005 | 8:28AM

Auto Mechanics

We've all had to deal with auto mechanics before and we all know how shady these people can be. I think they train these guys at the same place they train those people who sell "500 DVD's for only 1 penny!*" And then you look around but cannot find where it explains the *, so you ignore it and sign your life away. Yes, mechanics are sleezy. I swear they make stuff up! If you take your car in to get something as simple as an oil change done, you will almost always get one of these calls in less than an hour:

(RING RING CLICK)
Me: Hello?
Him: Hi, may I speak with Amanda?
Me: Speaking...
Him: Yes, Amanda, this is Carl with Bercher Firestone.
Me: Oh, hi, you finished the oil change? I'll be back up there in about 5 minutes. It was $39.99, right?
Him: Well, actually we've found a couple of problems with your car that you'll need to have done soon, I was just gonna run some stuff by you.
Me: Um... sure...
Him: Well first of all, we found that your gaskets are rusting, so they need to be replaced...
Me: Ok.
Him: Also, the temperature gage seems to be a little off so that needs to be replaced.
Me: Ok...
Him: And when was the last time you had your flippigoiner bulb changed? ...cuz that's the dirtiest flippigoiner bulb I have ever seen.
Me: Yeah... um... ok...
Him: It also seems that your glovebox fluid is low, so we need to fill that up.
Me: Glovebox fluid?
Him: Yes, Amanda, just some routine maintenance. Hold on a second, would ya? WHAT WAS THAT HAROLD? YEAH IT'S AMANDA..... OK I'LL LET HER KNOW. Ok sorry about that, anyway, Harold says that your sunroof is missing.
Me: I don't have a sunroof.
Him: Yeah that's what I said... anyway that's really cheap, $2.50 for the part, and then just two grand for the installation.
Me: What?!!
Him: It's all gonna total up to about $10,000. Oh and one more thing, in order to have your oil changed, because of the way your car is built, we had to take the whole thing apart and put it back together. And we seem to have lost your transmission in the process, so we're gonna need to get that too.
Me: Holy crap! What in the world is going on with that? How long until I can have my car back???

Bad Blogs

I have noticed that there is a big difference between a good blog and a bad blog. The bad blogs tend to be those made by teenage girls (no offense). It's not all of them, it's mainly just the ones that when you ask them how their day was, you'll end up with the following conversation.

Me: hey how ya been?
Some Random Girl:
read my Xanga and find out!
Me:
well im kinda busy, can i just get a one word answer?
Some Random Girl:
NO READ IT NOW! and leave a comment too!
Me:
um... yea I guess so.

And then I'll finally get to the blog, whether it be Xanga, Live Journal, Grab or Myspace, and I find that one entry is about 14 pages long. These girls will spill every single little insignificant detail onto their online diary. Here's the typical blog entry made by the typical teenage girl.

October 25, 2005
Current mood: >:-o
Current music: BRITNEY SPEARS! oops i did again, or something like that
Current book: dr. phil's biography
Entry: Hey guys! its me again! i bet you missed me huh? well i woke up today at 6:27 and i was like WHOA thats waaaay too early, and so i went back to sleep and then woke back up at 6:30 cuz thats when i wake up every morning. I still have teeth and elbows as i have mentioned in my previous 47 posts. i went downstairs and ate breakfast. i made cinmon rolls and they were the little kind and i almost didnt wanna eat em because they are so cute! but i was hungry so i did. but i was mad because there wasnt enough icing on them cuz my crazy little brother ate some of it when i wasnt looking. i was so mad, i almost didnt go to school. but i did and i DROVE today. my mom doesnt know yet but when she finds out im SO grounded. but i dont care, it was worth it! but omg im so weirded out and stuff cuz this dude looked at me funny when i was on my way to skool today and i think he was checking me out and he was like old… like at least 2 years older than me. i was like eugh. but he might have just been looking at the sky but I couldnt really tell. he was ugly tho but omg i saw a bird on the way to skool and it was like flying and I was like wow ive never seen them do that b4 you know?! so yeah I think i want a bird now...etc ...blah blah blah.

I decided to end it a little early to spare you. The details kill me. They just eat at my soul like David Letterman's horrible chuckle.
