Home Depot
Sep 30, 2005 | 9:51AM

First he bugs me to write for the Official Blog, then he features me on top of that. I'm honored.

If you read my blog below, you know that we are remodeling a small house on the back of our property. The electrician that we are using, we've used before a few years ago and we really like him. Reasonably priced, does a great job, and he's really nice on top of it all. He only does electrical work on people's homes part time. His "day job" is working at Home Depot 4 days a week.

So, we're watching TV the other night and my wife stops the TV and makes it go back (we have a Tivo. We can do that.) She says "Watch this Home Depot commercial". At the end of it, there is our electrician, big as day. If you see a Home Depot commercial and the last guy you see is a dark haired guy with a mustach and and nice smile, that's our guy.

I haven't been home while he's been working at the house, but I'll try ot get a photo. You'll recognize him from TV.

I know someone from a TV commercial! I'm famous!

JD Wins! They Deserve Each Other!
Sep 21, 2005 | 9:44AM
JD Wins!

Mig got voted out first, so it was Marty and JD at the end. They picked JD. I could write a bunch about what all happened, but I can't. The more I watched this show, the more I I realized why I was NOT an INXS fan. I don't like JD and I don't like INXS. They deserve each other.

My prediction is that they fade into obscurity within a year and that Marty skyrockets with his band. Mark my words.

Here is Marty's Band Site. http://www.lovehammers.com

I've always thought that JD was a great Elvis impersonator. Tonight he sang You Can't 'Always Get What You Want. It was "Elvis Does The Rolling Stones". Here's a photo of JD.

I can't write any more. It's too depressing. Go talk about it in the forum...

Survivor - Jim Is First To Go Home
Sep 16, 2005 | 11:58AM

Here is the recap of the first survivor episode on Sept. 15, 2005. Sorry about that whole presidential speech if that got in your way or if your VCR didn’t work. (You should buy a Tivo.)

It didn’t start with people jumping out of a boat. It didn’t start with people picking teams. It started with 16 people divided into two tribes, Yaxha, pronounced “Yaa-Shaw”, and Nakum, pronounced “Naa-Koom”. They hiked in to meet Jeff, who then introduced them to their two new tribe-mates, Stephanie and Bobby Jon, from Survivor: Palau, last season. Everyone was all excited to see them. Some of the women even cried to meet Steph. I like her too, but come on….

The first challenge for reward is a little hike through the jungle. The winner will get the “better” camp and flint for fire. The losers will not. The first team to make it to the good camp will win. Both teams get a map and a compass. Jeff says the most famous words in racing, “Survivors, Ready? Go!”. They have to decide how much of the supplies, fruit, water, corn, they want to carry and how much to leave behind. They’ve never talked to each other before, but there are no conflicts this time. They start running through the jungle.

Both teams go off into the jungle with different maps in different directions. They are not walking on a path, but through the jungle in every sense of the word. Blake has a spiked branch fall on this shoulder and they have to pick spines out of it. The guys all seem to be dehydrated first and start cramping up. They all walk until dark and decide to sleep in the forest, in the dark. Poor cameramen…

They wake up to monkeys in the trees screaming at them. They leave when it’s light. All of the guys seem to be really hurting. The two tribes see each other in the jungle and come out to a road at almost the same time. Steph’s tribe lags behind and they end up at the lake after the others. They both have to get into their canoes and paddle across the lake and hike up into the “good” camp to win. Nakum is ahead and ultimately wins by about 5 minutes or less. It’s basically a 24 hour race and Yaxha loses by 5 minutes. Tough break.

Beat SurvivorsThe “winners” get to set up camp, but 4 of their 5 guys are throwing up and laying down. Bobby Jon looks like he’s about to die, seriously like he needs to be in an emergency room now. He got really cold, cramped up and threw up. His eyes rolled back in his head and he’s about to lose it. All of them are throwing up for a while.

This is just good TV, you know? Guys who can’t walk and are throwing up. When they said this would be the toughest, they weren’t kidding. I’m glad I wasn’t eating dinner when I watched this one. Wow. Stephanie said that this was the most difficult challenge in any Survivor ever.

None of the women threw up. None of them. They all feel fine. The losers paddle back across the lake and set up their new camp. This would be Steph’s tribe. She gets everyone organized and they work really well together. They just lost, but they have a great attitude and a lot of heart.

Back at the “good” camp, Yaxha is struggling with their guys. they are pretty beat. Then comes the immunity challenge by treemail on an oar. They all meet by the lake where they are shown the immunity idol and the challenge is explained.

Each tribe has to paddle out to a buoy, go around it, take a torch off of it, come back to shore. When they get to shore, they attached a rope to the front and some of the tribe pulls it up the shore of the lake, while rolling it on top of logs. The others take the logs at the back of the canoe and move them to the front as it moves up the hill.

This works much better in theory than in practice. Paddling canoes is OK, but moving these logs and carrying the boat is not pretty. Steph gets her foot caught under one and another girl gets her foot caught. People are falling down and bumping into each other. Third graders could do better, I think.

So this goes on for a a bit and they are both very close in progress. Finally , Steph’s team, the one with the least amount of sick guys, barely wins it. Yaxha, the blue tribe, gets immunity. This means that there will finally be a tribal council that Steph does NOT attend. Congratulations to Stephanie and Yaxha.

Back at camp, they need to decide who to vote off. No one really knows anyone yet. No one has made any one mad. They’ve all been too busy hiking, sleeping in the jungle, and throwing up. Everyone really likes everyone else. It comes down to the guys feeling bad, so it should be one of them. Jim actually tore a bicep lifting the canoe, so he’s got his arm in a sling. Jim is the weakest one and really needs to see a doctor.

Tribal council is held in a Mayan ruin and looks the part. I wonder if the burning barrels made any permanent marks on the protected ruins, but we’re making TV here, so it doesn’t matter. The Nakum tribe walks in to the council area. Jeff asks some predictable questions, then they vote. I don’t want to ruin the surprise here, but if you’ve been keeping track, there’s one guy who can’t use his arm. The votes? All 5 votes are for Jim, probably out of pity as much as strategy. I think he was glad to go.

This really was the toughest challenge that I’ve ever seen on Survivor. I hope they are all feeling better by the next show. I felt sorry for them all.

Who do you think will do the best? Who will be voted off next? Young? Old? Male? Female?

Tell us what you think in the forum.

Suicide Blond -Suzie Goes Home
Sep 15, 2005 | 3:21PM
We're down to the final three. Next week is the final week. This was the final elemination show. Sigh... Suzie went home tonight. I'm going to miss her.

Encore per the audience vote went to Marty, doing Trees. The in house audience picked JD to open for him. Marty asked if he should do it acoustic or electric. He'd smash a guitar if they wanted it electric. What do you think they chose? He sang it great. Fun, loud, exciting, screaming. It was wonderful. I love that song. JD sang his acuostic. It was alright, soft, quiet, whatever.

As the first of the bottom three, Suzie sang Suicide Blond and did a good job. Not moving, but good.

As the second of the bottom three, JD sangBy My Side. He did another good Elvis impression. That's all he can really do, I must say. All the girls in the audience went wild again. There were a lot of girls in the audience. 90%.

Mig was the final in the bottom three (for the first time!). Mig tore it up! He sang What You Want and just killed it. Tore his shirt so the girleys could see his Yummy Chest. Tight pants. He was the show tonight. The crowd went wild. His comment at the end was that he already felt like a winner at this point, so he was happy with whatever happened.

Suspense... "JD....You are in the final three." That brought it down to Mig and Suzie. In the bottom three 6 times and 1 time. Suzie, you're not right for Our Band, INXS.

I have a sinking feeling that JD will win it all.

Who will win it all? Tell us in the forum...

Better Than Pity
Sep 15, 2005 | 3:08PM
JD wore a shirt that said "Better Than Pretty". He's not. I only have pity for him. We're down to the final four. Next week is the final week. This was the final performance show. Sigh... I'm gonna miss them. I'm going to miss hating JD.

Suzie stared tonight and sang Interstate Love and What's Up. She did a good job and had a lot of fun. I really enjoyed watching her go into the audience. She had the least stress and most fun tonight.

JD sang whatever his own song was that everyone seems to love so much along with Money, by Pink Floyd. He actually did pretty good. Was a crowd pleaser and all that. He got lots of praise from Our Band INXS.

Marty sang an acoustic version of his song, Trees, which I still love, then a dark song, Creep, by Radiohead. I must admit he did scream a little more than I thought he should. I might even go so far as to say that he might not have been better than JD tonight. I still like him a lot, but tonight was not his best performance. It was JD's best, that is to say, tonight is as good as JD gets.

Mig sang Paint It Black, by the Rolling Stones. He came off really weak. It takes some force to do Mick Jagger and he just doesn't have it. He sang Kiss From A Rose last, which fit his style really well, but that style is pop and syrupy. I personally was not thrilled, but I do like him. Didn't get a lot of praise from the band.

Dave told him that he should take off his jacket to get some help with the votes...so he did.

All of the songs tonight seemed to be picked for how difficult they were to sing. They really pushed each of the singers. This was the last performance show. Tomorrow they kick someone off and then we have next week. Wow. It's almost over, kids!

The first vote order was:
1. Marty
2. JD
3. Suzie
4. Mig

I have a sinking feeling that JD will win it all.

Who will be kicked off tomorrow night? Tell us in the forum...

Remodeled House - Part Two
Sep 11, 2005 | 2:32PM
An army has invaded El Segundo. Extreme Makeover - Home Edition is remodeling a home at the corner of Holly and Washington. Here's a Satellite Map of the Extreme Makeover House

This is a shot of the map with all of the area that they have taken over and closed off. There is a public viewing area so you can watch, but they have taken over two full blocks of street and half the park behind the house. It's like a military zone. The house is in Blue and the closed area is Red.

Here's the front of the house. It's lit up like daylight in this whole area. These photos were taken about 11pm on Saturday night. They are working 24/7 to make this happen in time.

This is across the street. Stay behind the railings. There is a small grand stands over there.

The guards were very nice, but they do carry guns. Please do what they ask.

Here's the view from the far, north end of the park. They have this entire area closed off. There are areas for the workers to eat, to assembly, to get supplies, and whatever else they need to do. The house they are working on is in the distance, where the large light is behind the tree.

This is the wood shop. It's under a canopy with camo netting blocking the side view so people don't slow when they drive by. I wish I had half they stuff they have here.

Looking down the street to the north. The house is on the right. That stand of lights on the right in this photo is the same one that is in the first photo of the house. The railing is the same as the railing on the far side of the street in the second photo, behind the guard.

I heard that the big reveal is on Tuesday at 1:30pm. I'm not sure of that, but it might be fun to be there then.

Here's a bonus photo of me in front of the house while they are working on it. At one point, I walked across the street were I wasn't supposed. I was supposed to go down to the end of the block and cross. I didn't. My wife was looking for me, so she asked a guard "Have you seen my husband". He told her "Yeah. He's over there. The big guy with the hair, right?". I was so proud. I'm known as "the big guy with the hair".

Good, But Not Great - Rockstar INXS
Sep 07, 2005 | 9:43AM
They started out with a Levi marketing photo shoot. I wouldn't mention any sponsors, except I wear Levi 501s every day and I love them. I'm afraid of zippers.

JD had a birthday party in the mansion (he turned 14) and they had a food fight to celebrate. Ah, Junior High...

Tonight, they had each rocker sing a song picked by the fans for them and one original song they wrote.

JD started the night off with Come As You Are by Nirvana. He is not Kurt Cobain or anything like him. It was typical JD. Over the top performance, touching girl's faces, twitching like a cockroach. It was a solid "whatever" performance. I'm sure the girls loved him. He sang his original song that he wrote a few weeks ago when he threw his little song writing tantrum. It had a hook, but he was just...just...JD. Our Band INXS said that he had been missing the last few weeks, but "tonight, you're back". They must be getting paid by Mark Burnett to keep the bad boy in the hunt as long as possible to build drama. Still not getting it...

Suzie sang I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitte. This is a very hard song to sing and happens to be my one of wife's favorite songs, but she was impressed. Suzie had good control and a beautiful voice. I think she nailed it. She sounded great and I was feeling it. Her original song was Soul LIfe and she dedicated it to Ty Taylor, the guy who went home last week. The song was not great. Derivative, pop kind of song, but she sang it well. Good job. Navarro said that she had the strongest voice of anyone here. She got other praise from Our Band INXS. Two thumbs up.

Jordis finally got to sing We Are The Champions by Queen. This is the song that JD beat out of her and then blew big time in front of the world "because his sister was in the crowd...". Jordis had the voice and she rocked it. She sounded great on this. Had some of her own touches and made it interesting. I laughed and I was totally feeling this one. She did really good on this song. Her original song was dedicated to Marty Casey and was named "Try Not" about how this contest is hard and she's having trouble being who she is under the pressure. That's what I got from it anyway. It was boring. She sang well, but it wasn't great. Dave Navarro asked her if she was losing some of the fire. She said she felt like she stumbled.

Marty was given "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters to sing. He's been told not to scream so much so this was going to be hard to pull off. He did it by going acoustic. When it was toned down like that, his strength really came through. He really sang this well. OK, he screamed a little, but hey... The song needed it. It was heartfelt, solid, emotional. I liked it a lot. Best performance of the night. His original was a song he wrote named Trees. It was a really fun song, lots of hooks and energy and dancing around. It was about a man trying to convince a woman to fall in love with him. It was funny too. It made me laugh and gave me chills. I liked it. At the end of the song, someone threw panties on the stage. Yes, a black G-string on the stage. He picked it up and showed us all. What a moment that was. Ha! Our Band INXS gave him high praise. They said that his original song was the best of the evening. I concur.

The final analysis? I think Marty was the best, Suzie a close second. Jordis would be third (sorry) and Mig would be 4th. You know where I think JD should be. The votes at the end of the show were for all 5 Rockers in order. The order they showed us was:

1. Marty
2. Suzie
3. JD
4. Mig
5. Jordis

I guess the only way I can explain JD and Mig being higher than I think they should be, is that they have a large fan base among teenage girls. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Do you like JD or MIg? Will the results stay the same? Will they change? Will Jordis go home this week? Tell us in the forum...

Rockstar - Ty Goes Home!
Sep 01, 2005 | 9:49AM
Suzie was picked for the encore, but then they asked her to pick someone to do an opening act for her. With no hesitation at all, she picked Marty, who did an ever better job than the night before. The scary conductor guy came back, but it added to the show. He was really good. Suzie came out and had a really good time doing her encore. It was fun to watch her. She sang it really well. Asked the audience to sing with her and everything. She did great. I think she's moving to the top of the list.

They played some video from the mansion after the last performance. JD jumped on Suzie and told her she "had no right" to say they he took a long time in the recoding studio, when they asked her about it during the show. He made her cry. All the others bashed JD for being such a jerk. They are all tired of him, it sounds like.

INXS asked various people about it. Suzie said they worked it out. JD said that he started out "to win at all costs, but that wasn't really working for him, so now he's just here to sing". Imagine me rolling my eyes.

The initial bottom 3 were JD, Ty, and Marty. They put Jordis in the bottom 3 "at some time". Suzie and Marty were never in the bottom 3. The first person they called to be in the final bottom 3 was JD. (yah!) He sang "This Time" which contained the words that I hoped were indicative of what would happen, "The time will be the last time that we will fight like this". He pointed at the other singers while singing that line. Nice touch. Now go home, JD.

Ty was the next up. He sang "The One Thing" and did a solid job. He's really good, but it was not moving. INXS said that he blew some of the words. He did alright. Better than JD.

The final choice was.... "Marty....wait. You're safe". Brooke said that Marty got more votes than all the others in the bottom 3 put together. That made Jordis as the final act. She sang "Listen Like Thieves" and did a really good job. Seemed like she had some fun. I liked her best of the 3.

Final verdict? All the performances were "underwhelming" per INXS. I had to agree, but I blame the songs. Sorry, but I was never an INXS fan and this show isn't making me into one. Of the 3, they picked Ty as "not right for our band, INXS". Sorry Ty. I would have picked JD, but Ty was next anyway. He's really, really good and has a future out there, but he really isn't right for INXS.

Sorry , Ty. I'm going to miss you. You was one of my initial favorites to win.

Do you agree with their pick? Tell us in the forum...

Rockstar INXS 8-30
Aug 31, 2005 | 10:14AM
They were all good performances tonight. I'll even give JD his due. I think he's going home tomorrow, but he was alright tonight. His problem is the everyone else was spectacular. They had horns and a string section, along with a church choir backing them up tonight. The choir wasn't miced very well, so I didn't hear them as well as I should have, but it was a good show tonight.

The clinic this week was for each person to lay down a track for a new, unreleased INXS song. Each went to the studio and recorded their version of it. JD slept while Marty practiced. Jordis got dinged for "interpreting" the song because she misunderstood the instructions. Suzie got high praise for her job.

JD was terrible and blew the words. They asked him about it and his answer was that he wanted them to tell him what to do, not come in with his own version of it. My BS filter got plugged and I had to clean it out after that answer. They are setting him up to be the dramatic loser. He plays that part so well.

Ty went first and did a solid job on You Can't Always Get What You Want by the Rolling Stones. I love old rock and roll, but he didn't move me like the others did. Good, solid job, but he needs better at this point.

JD sings Elvis. Think about that for a while. Suspicious Minds. He was an Elvis impersonator in the past and wanted to shed that memory by singing it his own way. He was over the top, in his own way this time. The girls liked it I guess, but he's going home tomorrow night after this one.

Marty needed to sing an old, classic, calmer song to show his versatility, so he did Wish You Were Here, by Pink Floyd. He just stood there and sang the song. It was perfect. He cried at the end, it was so moving. It gave me chills to watch him. There was no screaming, no crazy director guy, none of that. It was emotional, heartfelt, amazing. I hate to use the word awesome so much, but this one really was. Marty is back. His comment at the end was that singing in front of the house band, string section, horns, and a choir, was "the greatest moment of my life". INXS said it was smooth, at ease, softer, less is more. I agree.

Jordis sang Imagine, by John Lennon. It was another one that gave me chills. She tried to play the guitar, but mostly sat there and sang. That's all she had to do though. Her voice is beautiful and her delivery was perfect tonight. Brought a little of her own style to it, but basically nailed it. Comment afterward was that it was hard not to cry listening to her.

Mig needed a bad boy song and got Live And Let Die, by Paul McCartney. He ripped it up and gave it all he had. I liked it. It was fun to watch. He wasn't technically perfect, but did a great job anyway. It was really good. INXS criticized him for singing over the instrumentals. I liked it, but I don't think it's good enough to keep him out of the bottom three. Sorry, man.

Suzie finished the show with Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. This is a song that you can make you or break you. It's a difficult to sing. Slow soft stuff, hard rock, then more soft stuff. She gave me chills. I laughed out loud. It made me happy to watch her sing this one. She was right on the whole way. She got every part of it right on. INXS said that this was the best performance of the whole season so far and I have to agree. One of them said he was proud to know that she wanted to sing for INXS. High praise, but I think well deserved. I'd pay money to see her sing.

The initial bottom three were JD (of course), TY, and Marty. I think that Mig will replace Marty in the final count. I predict that JD will finally go home, the sun will shine, birds will sing and all the people of earth will be free again, if only because they don't have to listen to JD any more.

Who will go home this week? Tell us in the forum...

Queen Of The Bottom 3 Is On Top
Aug 25, 2005 | 9:47AM
The big queston was "will the good performers who had a bad night be in the bottom three or will they be spared based on past performances"?

They showed a lot of background info tonight and made it into an hour long show. It seems to be building steam now that the number of singers is getting smaller. There was lots of conversation among the singers at the mansion. Nothing you wouldn't expect.

Suzie was choosen to do the encore. She rocked it again. She was too much fun to watch sing Start Me Up. Yes, another stage dive at the end. I loved it.

Conversation tonight was that Marty went too hard core last night, but wanted to "be himself". They mentioned "The Scary Conductor Guy" with Marty. If you've seen him perform, you'd understand. That was funny. Deanna was still in her comfort zone, but she did it to "be herself". JD sucked up to the band. Suzie brought a hat that said "Queen Of The Bottom 3" and was ready for the bottom again. She's been there a bunch of times.

They had the three that were announced last night stand up. They were Deanna, Ty, and Jordis. Then Brooke said that the others who were in the bottom 3 at some time during the evening should also stand up. They were JD, Marty, and Mig. Yes, folks, do the math quickly. Suzie was the only one left sitting down. She was NEVER in the bottom 3 at any time, while every one else was at some time. Congratulations Suzie.

Then they had people sit back down. The final 3 were Ty, Deanna, and Marty. Yes, Marty. His song was really bad last night, so it didn't surprise me, but still. It was down to him or Jordis. They had each announced, then sing their song before the next was announced. Jordis looked really freaked out by not being chosen. She said she deserved it.

Ty sang What You Need and did a solid job. Not bad, but not feeling it either. He kinda got emotional in his comments. He really wanted the job. Deanna was next and did a great job on Elegantly Wasted. Her voice fit and it was dead center in her comfort zone. She nailed it. Last came Marty and he did a really good job on Don't Change. He was actually kind of "pop" singing this one. It wasn't as hard core as last night and he sounded really good.

The final decision came down to Ty and Deanna, as Marty was told to sit down. It was an emotional moment as Deanna was told that she was going home. She cried. Ty cried. Suzie cried. Mig cried. It was tough on everyone.

It getting to the point where everyone is really good. For Deanna to be in the top 7 in this is really good for her. Next week, we'll hope that JD goes home. It's getting tough to choose.

Who will go home next week? Tell us in the forum...

My World Is Spinning Out of Control!
Aug 24, 2005 | 10:02AM

Rockstar INXS

Last week was a really great week, marked by standout performances that gave me chills. This week, it was different. The good were bad and the bad were good. What's happening?

It started out with them all writing their own songs. Then they were told that only two of them could sing their original song and they had to fight over them. Mig and Deanna got to do their own songs and they both did a great job with them.

Suzie started off with Start Me Up by the Rolling Stones. She rocked it and had a great time up there. She sang with abondon, did agreat mic Jagger imitation and had fun. Went over to the other contestants and sang with them, then did a stage dive into the crownd. I had fun just watching her. Great job.

JD - Wearing stupid looking shades and then keeping his hand in his pants just creeps me out. It must be a girl thing, cuz I just don't get him. He sang "Cold as Ice" and did OK. He didn't suck tonight like he has in the last few weeks. I was shocked that I almost didn't hate him. He missed a few notes, but wrote that off to "interpretation". Yeah, whatever. A fairly solid performance. Darn it...

Deanna sang an original song called My Truth. Did a solid job. I usually hate her voice and stage presence, but she did pretty good. The song really fit her voice. They said she was in her "saftey zone", but the song really fit her. If it was something else, she wouldn't have done so well. I liked her though.

Ty sang Proud Mary and started it out slow and soulful, then cranked it up to rock and roll. He didn't have something, so it didn't move me, but it was still a good show. He had the three girls sing backup for him. They did well, also. OK, but not great.

Mig sang an original song, Do or Die, and also did a good job with it. It was more rock and roll than his other songs have been. He kicked it up and did alright. Weird pants with what looked like a jock strap, but whatever. He was playing the Rock Star and he played it well.

Marty, my favorite, did a song I'm not aware of, I Alone, and did alright, but screamed more of it than sang it. I was realy not impressed. I hated the song and his vocals were not great. I was shocked that this week, JD did better than Marty. I love Marty but tonight was not his night. Sorry, dude.

Jordis sang Dream On by Aerosmith. She even had the scarf on the mic. She started out OK, but seemed like she was trying too hard or something. She was freaked because there was a note that she could not hit in practice. She could have rearrainged it, but she didn't. She tried it straight up and didn't make it. It was terrible. I felt so bad for her. It was a good effort, but she failed tonight.

Let's review. JD didn't suck. Marty did. Deanna didn't suck. Jordis did. Suzie rocked it and Ty didn't quite connect. I have no idea who should go next week. I'm guessing Deanna, based on past performances, but it's a toss up this week.

The polling at the end had Deanna, Ty, and Jordis in the bottom three. Will they be there tomorrow? Who will go home? What did you think about this week? Tell me in the forum...

I love the Mythbusters. Amazing TV show where they do bizarre things in entertaining ways.

This is a photo of them in front of the the radio controlled, rocket powered Chevy that they drove 100 mph on a dry lake to see if it would take off and crash. It didn't fly, but it was very cool to watch the rockets launch and just shoot this car ahead. The chase helicopter shots were great.

Here is the link to this myth.

These guys are funny too. It's really entertaining to watch. "Amazing" is the word that keeps coming to mind.

This Was A Good Week On Rockstar INXS

Tonight was one of the best shows ever. It keeps getting better and better. This week was an acoustic week. They brought in a strings section and slowed everything down. A couple people did much better in this style.

Another change this week was that the band picked the songs for each singer instead of them fighting over them. They got a letter explaining why they got that song. There was only one performance that I thought wasn't that great and it wasn't that bad.

The "clinic" this week was for song writing. They divided them into 2 teams of 4 to write a song together. My favorite jerk, JD, decided that his team's song sucked, so he quit and wrote his own. Because it was a "team building" test, his team lost. During the intro of the tonight's show, he totally criticized his team, their song, and got booed. What an idiot.

Here's what happened with the performances tonight.

Jordis went first and sang "Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan. This is a classic that could easily go badly. She sang it differently than the original, but "made it her own" and did really well. I love this song and she gave me chills. This was another home run. Outstanding.

Jessica sang "Torn" and did really well. It was probably her best performance ever. Not the best on the show, but her personal best. She needed it and she got it. Not bad at all. I liked it and I think she'll avoid the bottom 3 this week.

Ty sang "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart. I grew up with this song. It was one of my first records. I love it, but Ty didn't make me happy. He did a good job. Ty always does, but he didn't thrill me. He gave it a Motown groove and it was interesting, but I wasn't feeling it.

Suzie did "Bring It On Home" and did a really good job for a white girl singing a black man's song. She had some soul and really worked it. I liked her and I think she did really good. INXS said she had one of the best voices in the competition. I agree.

Marty... Marty. Marty. Marty. Un-freaking-believable. He was assigned "Baby, One More Time" from Britney Spears. Yes, Marty sings Britney. Just roll that around in your head for a minute. So, how did he do? Imagine Britney done by Nirvana. He took it to a whole new place, a darker, twisted place. He made this song actually really, really good. If I hadn't known that she had done it before, I would never have guess that it was a pop song. There was no sugar in this performance. It was filled with angst and emotion. I loved this. Marty is my new hero. I just sat there saying "Wow" over and over as I listened. Unbelievable. They should just hire this guy now and forget the rest of the show. Wow.

Deanna sang "Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt. I must say that this is my wife's favorite song, by her favorite performer. She thought it was terrible, but I think that's because she loves the original so much. I think that Deanna did a good job. Not as good as Bonnie, that's true, and maybe not good enough to stay out the the bottom 3, but she did a good job. A little shakey, but it was a very difficult song, technically, to sing. I liked it, but it may not be good enough.

JD tried to do "As Tears Go By", a Rolling Stones song. INXS told him that they wanted to hear him be "real" with this song. I gotte tell you, he can fake "real" with the best of them. Look at how many people like this arrogant pig. He did this one alright, but not great. I'd almost give a "good", but it was easily the worst performance of the night. His entertaiment value has worn out. He needs to go home tomorrow. He got mixed reviews from INXS. I didn't get it. JD Go Home!

Mig was the final performance of the night. He was assigned the Peter Framption song "Baby I love Your Way", which I was never impressed with. He chose to play the piano himself while he sang. This could go so bad, in so many ways. I like Mig and I hoped for the best. Then he started to play and sing. Wow. Another amazing performance. I'm not sure he nailed it technically, but it gave me chills. He took a mediocre song and made it great. Dave Navaro's comment at the end was that he's always thinking about what he's gonna say at the end of each song, but during that performance, all he could think about was how much he loved his wife. It really moved me too. Another home run, out of the park.

Jordis, Marty, and Mig were the big winners tonight. They were all amazing, over and above. At the end of the show they gave the bottom three at the moment. They were " Ty, Deana, and Jessica. If Ty is in the bottom, then JD should be there instead of Jessica. I predict that the final bottom three will be Ty, Deanna, and JD. He does have his fans though, so who knows about JD. What do you guys see in him?

So, It was a good show. What did you think about this week? Tell me in the forum...

Survivor behind the scenes tidbits
Aug 15, 2005 | 4:35PM

Here is some info from a interesting, new blog. I have no idea who their source is or how accurate the info is. It’s an good read though.

Survivor Thoughts from Iowa

My source for this information said I could tell her name, but she thinks it’d be more fun if I used a code name for her: Deep Foam.

I don’t know what that means.

What I do know is she has some reliable information that I can share with all of you. No boot predictions, but some details and a few clues to the personalities of our Maya Survivors.

Details first. They have at least one machete on each tribe as well as botas. Yaxha at least has salt and flour. Not certain if they won it or if both tribes start with some food. They most likely run into some rain early on (what a shock - they’re in the jungle). And, as TDT figured out, Yaxha is definitely the blue tribe. I’ve seen a picture of the flag.

On to personalities:

Jim has a good chance of annoying the women on his tribe. He’s considering hiding the fact that he was a fireman and is very aware that a fireman won last season. Most interesting to me is that he knows some sort of yoga or perhaps Tai Chi.

Judd is extremely proud of being a New Yorker (although he lives in New Jersey…). He doesn’t like people who don’t talk.

Margaret’s strategy is going to be under the radar.

Brandon is willing to do just about anything. And he knows how to juggle.

Danni directs the building of the shelter. She may not be the only one, but she definitely has a hand in it. Her nickname is Redneck Barbie. And she admits to this!

Blake doesn’t want to be the leader or do anything that might draw attention to himself, like fire starting. He does plan on working hard and being a provider.

Brooke says her faith in God is the important thing in her life. And she knows how to pretend to break her nose.

Cindy likes animals more than people. Could end up the loner on the tribe. If betrayed, she’ll be devastated.

Gary is a bit of a religious nut. He’s also working hard to set up the shelter. Like Jim, he plans to hide his identity as he thinks being an ex-NFL QB could be a detriment to chances.

Amy believes that in her work as a cop she has learned how to see through deceptive people. Her strategy is to remain positive no matter what happens. And she can do just amazing things with her tongue. I kid you not.

Rafe describes himself as a gay Mormon Ivy League grad wilderness guide. He says he can be emotional and understanding of other people and use that to his advantage.

Morgan is afraid being impulsive and not thinking before speaking will be her downfall. I tend to agree with her.

Brian thinks he the most brilliant person on the planet. He also plans to hide his incredible intelligence because he thinks people will fear him and vote him out. Ha. He’s a total fan, seen every season, knows all the players. Believes determination will carry him through.

Edited because I forgot to include my least favorite Survivor of the season:

Brianna comes across as a bitch. She knows she has to keep her mouth shut and her attitude in check, but it seems unlikely she’ll be able to do so. Also, don’t expect her to bond with the other women. Her only chance is to join an alliance of men.

(I got nothing on Lydia and Jamie.)
