0810Bush Worships in China, Meets With Chinese President

0810Bush Worships in China, Meets With Chinese President
President Bush said prior to his arrival in China that he planned to take up human rights and other sensitive issues in private with Hu Jintao.
But his public comments to reporters at the start of the meeting focused largely on another topic - the deadly knife attack Saturday on an American couple and their Chinese tour guide.
When President Hu offered his condolences, Mr. Bush responded with words of thanks.
"I thank you for your expressions of sympathy and the ambassador informs me that your government has been very attentive and very sympathetic and I appreciate that a lot," he said.
The incident occurred at the Drum Tower, a popular tourist spot in Beijing. A lone assailant stabbed the parents of a former Olympic women's volleyball star, who is also the wife of the current US men's volleyball coach. Her father died and her mother remains in grave condition.
The Chinese man who attacked the couple and their guide committed suicide, and the motive for the incident is not known. President Hu promised a full investigation.
The Chinese leader said his government takes the matter very seriously. He told President Bush law enforcement authorities are pursuing the case in accordance with Chinese law.
The two met just a few hours after President Bush attended Sunday morning services at a government-approved church in Beijing
As he emerged from the church with members of his family, he made clear he believes faith has a place in China.
"You know, it just goes to show that God is universal, and God is love, and no state, man or woman should fear the influence of loving religion," said Mr. Bush.
The president has also made clear he has been having a grand time at the Olympics - cheering on Team USA at events ranging from beach volleyball to basketball.
He was at the swimming venue Sunday when American swimmer Michael Phelps won his first gold medal of the games with a victory in the 400 meter individual medley.
Mr. Bush returns to Washington on Monday.

Citys In China
Apr 21, 2008 | 12:13AM
Beijing
If your visions of Beijing are centred around pods of Maoist revolutionaries in buttoned-down tunics performing t'ai chi in the Square, put them to rest: this city has embarked on a new-millennium roller-coaster and it's taking the rest of China with it.
The spinsterish Beijing of old is having a facelift and the cityscape is changing daily. Within the city, however, you'll still find some of China's most stunning sights: the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven Park, the Lama Temple and the Great Wall, to name just a few.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong has the big city specials like smog, odour, 14 million elbows and an insane love of clatter. But it's also efficient, hushed and peaceful: the transport network is excellent, the shopping centres are sublime, and the temples and quiet corners of parks are contemplative oases.
Hong Kong has enough towering urbanity, electric streetscapes, enigmatic temples, commercial fervour and cultural idiosyncrasies to utterly swamp the senses of a visitor, and enough spontaneous, unexpected possibilities to make a complete mockery of any attempt at a strictly organised itinerary.
Macau
Macau may be firmly back in China's orbit, but the Portuguese patina on this Sino-Lusitanian Las Vegas makes it a most unusual Asian destination. It has always been overshadowed by its glitzy near-neighbour Hong Kong - which is precisely why it's so attractive.
Macau's dual cultural heritage is a boon for travellers, who can take their pick from traditional Chinese temples, a spectacular ruined cathedral, pastel villas, old forts and islands that once harboured pirates. A slew of musuems will tell you how it all came about.
Shanghai
Although the lights have been out for quite some time, Shanghai once beguiled foreigners with its seductive mix of tradition and sophistication. Now Shanghai is reawakening and dusting off its party shoes for another silken tango with the wider world.
In many ways, Shanghai is a Western invention. The Bund, its riverside area, and Frenchtown are the best places to see the remnants of its decadent colonial past. Move on to temples, gardens, bazaars and the striking architecture of the new Shanghai.
Xi'an
Xi'an was once a major crossroads on the trading routes from eastern China to central Asia, and vied with Rome and later Constantinople for the title of greatest city in the world. Today Xi'an is one of China's major drawcards, largely because of the Army of Terracotta Warriors on the city's eastern outskirts. Uncovered in 1974, over 10,000 figures have been sorted to date. Soldiers, archers (armed with real weapons) and chariots stand in battle formation in underground vaults looking as fierce and war-like as pottery can. Xi'an's other attractions include the old city walls, the Muslim quarter and the Banpo Neolithic Village - a tacky re-creation of the Stone Age. By train, Xi'an is a 16 hour journey from Beijing. If you've got a bit of cash to spare, you can get a flight.

Naps may boost memory
Jan 14, 2008 | 5:47PM
If you want to remember the information in this article, take a nap.
New research conducted by brain researcher Avi Karni of the University of Haifa in Israel explores the possibility that naps help lock in sometimes fleeting long-term memories. A 90-minute daytime snooze might help the most, the study finds.
"We still don't know the exact mechanism of the memory process that occurs during sleep, but the results of this research suggest it is possible to speed up memory consolidation," Karni said.
Long-term memory refers to memories that stay with us for years, such as "what" memories — a car accident that happened yesterday — or "how to" memories, such as one's learned ability to play the drums.
Karni, who co-authored the study in a recent issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience, instructed participants to learn a complex thumb-tapping sequence, then split the study subjects into two groups: one that napped for an hour, and one that didn't. The people who took an afternoon snooze showed sizeable improvement in their performance by that evening.
"After a night's sleep the two groups were at the same level, but the group that slept in the afternoon improved much faster than the group that stayed awake," Karni said.
And the study also showed just how much faster a 90-minute nap could help lock in long-term memories.
"Daytime sleep can shorten the time 'how to' memory becomes immune to interference and forgetting," Karni said. "Instead of 6 to 8 hours, the brain consolidated the memory during the 90-minute nap."

A Way to Express Opinion
Dec 05, 2007 | 11:52PM
An actor was making his debut performance and invited a prominent
director to watch his act, hoping that he would star him in his movies
and make him famous. He put forth his best effort. After the
performance, he came down from the stage and found that the
director had dozed off! The new actor was extremely hurt and said
to the director: "Let me tell you frankly, I invited you here because
I have tremendous faith in you, yet you dozed off! Can't you see
how important your opinion is to me?"
The director answered: "Dozing off is also a way to express my opinion!" http://wowgoldtoday.supersized.org/ http://www.bloglines.com/blog/sexybaby http://www.blog.co.tz/sexygirl/ wow gold world of warcraft gold wow gold

Sparter Launches, Go Buy Some World of Warcraft Gold
Jul 05, 2007 | 12:27AM
By:Michael Arrington [ wow gold / WOW Gold / ?? ]
Sparter, a stealth startup founded by Bessemer Venture Partners, launched this evening. They are jumping into the middle of the estimated $1 billion market for buying and selling virtual currencies in games like World of Warcraft (WOW), EverQuest, Eve and others. The current spot price of 100 gold on WOW? About $10.
The company is a true person to person trading company. Users can sign up and either buy or sell virtual currencies at market prices. There are already a number of sites that sell these currencies directly to users (IGE is the largest), but they don’t take sellers, just buyers. And the prices are set by the company, not the market.
I spoke to Dan Kelly and Boris Putanec, the two executives Bessemer brought in to start the company, earlier this week. They say that a major supply of WOW gold today comes directly or indirectly from “farmers” in China and India. People are paid a very low wage to play the game and gather small amounts of gold, which are then sold directly to players or to services like IGE. Those models are fine, they say, for people who want to buy currency. But it gives no way for people who want to liquidate their virtual gold into real world money.
eBay is one place where gamers currently try to trade virtual currency for real money, but the company started restricting the sale of virtual goods on the site earlier this year, and proactively removing listings that include virtual money and other items. Sparter is simply filling the void that eBay has voluntarily created, the company says.
Others note that eBay left the market due to trademark and other concerns. In particular, it is a violation of the terms of service of many of these services to exchange currency in this way. Whether these virtual worlds will turn a blind eye to Sparter’s activities, or attempt to fight it, remains to be seen.
Sparter acts as the go-between for the parties, keeping payments in escrow until both sides say the virtual transfer went through properly. Users are also asked to rate each other after a transaction. Users with higher reputational ratings may be able to charge a premium.
The company only supports trading in currency for now. Other digital goods cannot be traded on the platform. They say they have no plans to deviate from that strategy, unless users show strong demand down the road.

Secret Tip from Cash Creating Guide for World of Warcraft
Jul 01, 2007 | 9:18PM
Don't let anyone know I told you SHHHHH!!!! That's really cool.WOW Gold
I'm going to share a killer tip from the best World of Warcraft Gold Guide available. This secret tip has helped me earn a good deal of gold in a short amount of time.wow gold
Defias Windmill is pretty good spot to do some gold farming at just about any level. If you go to the Gold Coast area in Westfall, there is a windmill on a hill. Below the windmill, you can see a murloc camp. Surrounding the windmill are a TON of Defias mobs. Since these are humanoids, they will drop a lot of linen cloth and other good loot. They normally spawn around level 12 so they aren't too tough.
The key is that the respawn rates of the mobs are insanely fast. I took one of my higher end characters there and couldn't clear the area before more respawned. I eventually had to stop because my character was worn out and I was too. I left with stacks of linen and almost a bag or two full of lower level green items. All of these fetched a nice price at the auction house.
This spot also worked well for some of my middle level guys as well since they could grind away for experience and pick up some decent items that could be sold later.
This was the first I had heard of this spot, but it wasn't too crowded on the server I was on, so the secret might not be out..yet. Farm it while you can.
I'll see if I can find another good tip from the World of Warcraft Gold Guide. There are over 140 pages in the guide, so finding a good tip shouldn't be hard. I can't give them all away, but maybe one more to get the gold flowing.

Real-world buying for the 'World of Warcraft' crowd
Jun 21, 2007 | 12:15AM
(Credit: World of Warcraft) WOW Gold The notion of "frequent gamer rewards" has been tossed around by trend specialists and pundits (like MAKE Magazine's Philip Torrone) for some time now as online gaming becomes more and more profitable and increasingly entrenched in mainstream culture. Now, it's a reality with the World of Warcraft Visa credit card.
You can apply for it now. With your first purchase on the card, according to the World of Warcraft site, you'll earn a free month of game time.
But you won't be able to buy yourself new weapons by using this card. The WoW Visa does not earn you virtual currency--rather, you accrue game time toward your subscription. It's unclear what the thinking was behind this decision, but it's true that there has been some controversy about bridging the gap between virtual and real-world currency, most notably the eBay ban on virtual goods earlier this year.
You can't brand the World of Warcraft credit card with your avatar (yet), but you can choose from 13 total designs. Whether or not you want to use this card when you pick up the tab on a first date, however, is up to you.

Japanese policeman stabbed self to avoid work
Jun 12, 2007 | 2:52AM
A Japanese policeman, distraught by working long hours and weekends for two months, stabbed himself in the stomach with a knife to get some time off, police said Monday.
The 44-year-old officer knifed himself at his home in northwestern Japan on May 23, but told police he had been attacked, prompting an attempted murder investigation, Ishikawa prefecture police said in a statement.
Investigators began to suspect his story after they could not find evidence of anyone who matched the description the officer had given, a police spokesman said.
Suspicions were also raised because the officer - identified as Tomoyuki Mukaide in the Asahi newspaper - had waited about an hour before reporting the alleged attack, the spokesman said. His wounds were not life-threatening.
The officer, whose name was not released by police, had been in charge of a disaster relief detail following a March 25 earthquake in the area that killed one person injured more than 300, and damaged or destroyed more than 14,800 homes.
Police thought he had become distraught over his health after putting in long hours without a break in the quake's aftermath, and wanted to get away from work.
"He became very busy, he felt like he couldn't handle the work he had to do, and he felt the work was weighing him down," said the spokesman.
The officer admitted he had stabbed himself in questioning following his May 31 release from the hospital, the spokesman said. The case is now being investigated as filing a false report, a misdemeanor.
Japanese workers often face long overtime hours and weekends with little or no compensation.
Death from overwork, known as "karoshi," has steadily increased since the Health Ministry first recognized the phenomenon in 1987.
