When I can't sleep...
Apr 04, 2007 | 6:11AM

Since I suffer from insomnia most nights out of the week, I have to figure out new ways of getting tired enough to fall asleep.  Most nights, if I'm already in bed and i can't fall asleep, I think of something calming, like sitting on the beach or watching the rain.  If that doesn't work, I get back out of bed, reminding myself that in a half an hour, I need to try again.  I'll do something on my laptop that will get me tired, like doing the Jigsaw puzzle on msnbc, or playing a few games of freecell.  Most nights, something like this works, but there are times when I'm still up until 3 o'clock in the morning, no matter what I do.

I've had people recommend that I take an over-the-counter sleep aid, but I don't like the idea.  I don't want to become dependent on something like that, in order to sleep.  Others have recommended warm tea before bed, but I really can't stand tea.  Warm milk isn't something I would like, either.  So, it's either I give in and try things that I don't like, or I continue losing sleep.  oh well, maybe if I can keep my mind clear as I'm trying to sleep, it'll eventually help.

I also suffer from periods of insomnia. If it's possible, ask your dr for something that is non-habit forming, something you can take only when you know you're going to need it. If you can't make it to the dr, then maybe a soothing bath with candles and soft music might help lull your brain into accepting the fact that sleep is sometimes a good thing.

Hope you're able to find something that works for you. HUGS!!

Have you tried melatonin? It's not a sleep-aid per se, as that's the hormone that your body naturally produces when it gets dark and it's time to sleep. I take a very small dose-- 300 mcg, and it seems to help.

I know you don't like tea, but chamomile tea is really good for calming and soothing the nerves, it seems to help me sleep better. Can't hurt to try it just to see if the taste might grow on you. There's varieties of chamomile tea with added flavor-- chamomile + mint, or chamomile + spiced apple, etc... maybe those might be more palatable than just plain chamomile tea.

In addition to the chamomile tea, herbal remedies can sometimes be useful-- they usually contain things like chamomile and melatonin, as well as other herbs that seem to help you fall asleep. They're probably a better first start than OTCs that may cause dependence. And they come in pill form-- no tea to drink :-) My mom, also an insomniac, swears by the ones from Vitamin World.

And finally, the biggest thing that interferes with my ability to sleep is worrying about not being able to fall asleep, or worrying about not getting enough sleep. That's why I usually sleep better on weekends, when I know I don't have to up early for work, than on weekdays.
