Executive types who want a good combination of luxury and performance; commuters who like to rely on techno-gadgets to get where they're going safely.
Toyota Prius
Of course, the Prius has its limitations. Does it go around corners? Yes. Does it accelerate from zero to 60 mph? Yes. Does it do either of the above with the slightest bit of enthusiasm? If you have to ask, then don't buy one. The only fun you'll have in a Prius is when you're playing the "maximize my MPG" game with the dash-mounted energy monitor. But if you're like the hundreds of thousands of Prius buyers who have made it Toyota's third most popular model behind Camry and Corolla, that probably suits you just fine.
Nissan GT-R: Function
The beauty of the GT-R is that its controls are virtually identical to the excellent climate and audio controls found in the Infiniti G37. In fact, they are better placed — located high, slanted upward and canted toward the driver. A large LCD screen displays everything you'll need to know and is controlled redundantly by a touchscreen, physical buttons and a small multipurpose control knob. The iPod integration is one of the best on the market, while the navigation system is easy to program and features real-time traffic.
Dodge Dakota
Performance
The Dakota proved to have excellent brakes for a truck, even if it had rear drums and a soft pedal. From 60 mph, the fully loaded Dakota came to a stop in 126 feet — better than many family sedans. The Dakota's steering is pretty inert, though, offering little feedback through turns and a numb on-center feel. Still, there were no spooky moments when one editor got stuck in a biblical thunderstorm — the truck plowed confidently through rain and standing water.
Mini Cooper S Clubman
Ask a Southeast Asian street vendor whether one item is the same as another, and you're likely to hear "Same same, but different" in response. No one knows exactly what it means, but in certain contexts it's the perfect phrase. So it is with the 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman. It's not the same as a regular Mini — but it's not so different either. "Same same, but different" is the best way to sum it up.
Nissan Murano SL 2WD Comfort
In the 2009 Nissan Murano, you feel the road more than you hear it: Sound deadening is excellent, but the taut suspension means bumps of all sizes make their presence felt inside the cabin. The standard eight-way power driver seat allowed editors of many different shapes and sizes to find a satisfactory driving position, thanks to a fairly wide range of adjustments. The tilt-telescoping steering wheel helped, too, though we found the two different levers necessary to make these adjustments a bit annoying — one multifunction lever is preferable.
