In modern-day European-based folklore, Death is known as the Grim Reaper depicted in the as wearing a dark hooded cloak and wielding a scythe. The garb of Death or the black mourning robe, which the first references are found in the early fifteenth century, is very close to the robe of the priest or monk who officiated at the death bed. It is interesting to note that the dead body itself was never garbed in black -- the colour of the winding sheet or shroud seems always to have been white. The scythe is an image that reminds us that Death reaps the souls of sinners like the peasant harvest corn in his field. Each movement of the scythe brings thousands of souls.

In Greek mythology, Chronos (Cronus) was the king of titans and the father of Zeus.  He was also a harvest god called Father Time and carried a sickle which is a tool used in harvesting grain. The Grim Reaper carrying a scythe are directly derived from Cronus. The myth of Chronos eating his children was used in a poetic sense for time devouring all things, as in the old saying "nothing lasts forever." The three Greek words that were either related originally or related through confusion later were: Chronus (meaning "time"), Cronus (the god of harvest before the Greek gods took over), and corone (meaning "crow"). Little wonder then that we often see a crow accompanying the Grim Reaper.

Ted Bundy's First Arrest: In August 1975 police attempted to stop Bundy for a driving violation. He aroused suspicion when he tried to get away by turning his car lights off and speeding through stop signs. When he was finally stopped his VW was searched and police found handcuffs, an ice pick, crowbar, pantyhose with eye holes cut out along with other questionable items. They also saw that the front seat on the passenger side of his car was missing. Police arrested Ted Bundy on suspicion of burglary.

 

Bundy is Charged With Kidnapping: Police compared the things found in Bundy’s car to those DaRonch described seeing in her attacker’s car. The handcuffs that had been placed around one of her wrists were the same make as those in Bundy’s possession. Once DaRonch picked Bundy out of a line-up the police felt they had enough evidence to charge him with attempted kidnapping. The authorities also felt confident they had the person responsible for the tri-state murder spree that had gone on for more than a year.

 

Bundy is Charged With the Murder of Campbell: Bundy went to trial for attempted kidnapping DaRonch in February 1976 and after waiving his right to a jury trial he was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison. During this time police were investigating links to Bundy and the Colorado murders. According to his credit card statements he was in the area where several women vanished in early 1975. In October 1976 Bundy was charged for the murder of Caryn Campbell.

Bundy Escapes: Bundy was extradited from the Utah prison to Colorado for the trial. Serving as his own lawyer allowed him to appear in court without leg irons plus gave him an opportunity to move freely from the courtroom to the law library inside the courthouse. In an interview, while in the role as his own attorney, Bundy said, "More than ever, I am convinced of my own innocence." In June 1977 during a pre-trial hearing he escaped by jumping out of the law library window. He was captured a week later.

 

The Second Escape: On December 30 Bundy escaped from prison and made his way to Tallahassee, Florida where he rented an apartment near Florida State University under the name Chris Hagen. College life was something Bundy was familiar with and one he enjoyed. He managed to buy food and pay his way at local college bars with stolen credit cards. When bored he would duck into lecture halls and listen to the speakers. It was just a matter of time before the monster inside Bundy would resurface.

 

The Soroity House Murders: On Saturday, January 14, Bundy broke into Florida State University's Chi Omega sorority house and bludgeoned and strangled to death two women, raping one of them and brutally biting her on her buttocks and one nipple. He beat two others over the head with a log. They survived which investigators attribute to fello roommate Nita Neary, who came home and interrupted Bundy before he was able to kill the other two victims.

 

An Eye Witness: Nita Neary came home around 3 a.m. and noticed the front door to the house was ajar. As she entered she heard hurried footsteps above going toward the stairway. She hid in a doorway and watched as a man wearing a blue cap and carrying a log left the house. Upstairs she found her roommates. Two were dead, two others severely wounded. That same night another woman was attacked and the police found a mask on her floor identical to one found later in Bundy’s car.

 

Bundy Gets Arrested Again: On February 9, 1978, Bundy killed again. This time it was 12-year-old Kimberly Leach, who he kidnapped then mutilated. Within a week of the disappearance of Kimberly, Bundy was arrested in Pensacola for driving a stolen vehicle. Investigators had eyewitnesses who identified Bundy at the dorm and at Kimberly's school. They also had physical evidence that linked him to the three murders, including a mold of the bite marks found on in the flesh of the sorority house victim.

 

The Plea Bargain: Bundy, still thinking he could beat a guilty verdict, turned down a plea bargain whereby he would plead guilty to killing the two sorority women and Kimberly LaFouche in exchange for three 25-year sentences.

 

The End of Ted Bundy: Bundy went on trial in Florida on June 25, 1979 for the murders of the sorority women. The trial was televised and Bundy played up to the media when on occasion he acted as his own attorney. Bundy was found guilty on both murder charges and given two death sentences by means of the electric chair.

On January 7, 1980, Bundy went on trial for killing Kimberly Leach. This time he allowed his attorney's to represent him. They decided on an insanity plea, the only defense possible with the amount of evidence the state had against him.

Bundy's behavior was much different during this trial than the previous one. He displayed fits of anger, slouched in his chair, and his collegiate look was sometimes replaced with a haunting glare. Bundy was found guilty and received a third death sentence.

During the sentencing phase, Bundy surprised everyone by calling Carol Boone as a character witness and marrying her while she was on the witness stand. Boone was convinced of Bundy's innocence. She later gave birth to Bundy's child, a little girl who Bundy adored. In time Boone divorced Bundy after realizing he was guilty of the horrific crimes.

After endless appeals Bundy's last stay of execution was on January 17, 1989. Prior to being put to death Bundy gave the details of more than fifty women he had murdered to Washington State Attorney General's chief investigator, Dr. Bob Keppel. He also confessed to keeping the heads of some of his victims at his home plus to engaging in necrophilia with some of his victims. In his final interview he blamed his exposure to pornography at an impressionable age as being the stimulant behind his murderous obsessions.

Many directly involved with Bundy believed he murdered at least 100 women.

The electrocution of Ted Bundy went as scheduled amid a carnival like atmosphere outside the prison. On January 24, 1989, Theodore Bundy died at around 7:13 a.m. as crowds outside cheered his death.

Ted Bundy: He was attractive, smart, and had a future in politics. He was also one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history. Ted Bundy screamed his innocence until his death in the electric chair became imminent, then he tried to use his victims one more time – to keep himself alive. His plan failed and the world got a glimpse of the true evil inside him.

 

Theodore Robert Cowell: Ted Bundy was born Theodore Robert Cowell to Louise Cowell on November 24, 1946, at the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers in Burlington, Vermont. After eight weeks at the home Louise returned to her parents' house in Philadelphia to raise her new son. For the first several years of his life Ted thought his grandparents were his parents and his mother was his sister. In 1951 Louise and Ted moved to Tacoma, Washington and Louise married Johnnie Bundy, a military cook.

 

Bundy's Teenage Years: Despite his parental circumstances and meager surroundings Bundy was well behaved and grew into an attractive teen who was generally liked and who performed well in school. After high school he entered the University of Puget Sound and continued to do well academically, but felt uncomfortable around his fellow peers who were predominantly wealthy. In his sophomore year Bundy transferred to the University of Washington to escape the uncomfortable feeling of his financial inadequacy

Socially Challenged: Throughout his years at high school Bundy suffered from acute shyness that resulted in his appearing socially awkward. This affliction followed him to college and although Bundy had friends he never blended comfortably into doing much of the social activities others were doing. He rarely dated and kept to himself. But in 1967 Bundy met the woman of his dreams. She was pretty, wealthy, and sophisticated. They both shared a skill and passion for skiing and spent many weekends on the ski slopes.

 

Bundy's First Love: Ted fell in love with his new girlfriend and tried hard to impress her to the point of grossly exaggerating his own accomplishments. He tried to gain her approval with a summer scholarship to Stamford that he won although his time there was less than impressive. By 1968 she decided Bundy lacked any real future and was not husband material. She ended the relationship and broke Bundy's heart and his obsession toward her haunted him for years.

 

Depression and Whispered Rumors: Bundy suffered extreme depression over the break up and dropped out of school. It was during this time that he learned the truth that his sister was his mother and his parents were his grandparents. Bundy was also getting a whispered reputation by those close to him for being a petty thief. It was during this phase of his life that his shyness was replaced with false bravado and he returned in college, excelled in his major, and earned a bachelor's degree in psychology.

 

"Elizabeth": Bundy became involved with another woman, Elizabeth Kendall (the pseudonym she used when she wrote "The Phantom Prince: My Life With Ted Bundy") who was a divorcee with a young daughter. She fell deeply in love with Bundy and despite her suspicions that Bundy was seeing other women her devotion toward him continued. Bundy was not receptive to the idea of marriage, but allowed the relationship to continue even after reuniting with his first love who was attracted to the new confident, Ted Bundy.

 

A New Ted Bundy: Bundy worked on the re-election campaign of Washington's Republican Governor Dan Evans. Evans was elected and he appointed Bundy to the Seattle Crime Prevention Advisory Committee. Bundy's political future seemed secure, when in 1973 he became assistant to Ross Davis, chairman of the Washington State Republican Party. It was a good time in Bundy's life. He had a girlfriend, his old girlfriend was once again in love with him, and his footing in the political arena was strong.

 

A Man Named "Ted": In 1974 young women began vanishing from college campuses around Washington and Oregon. Lynda Ann Healy, a 21-year-old radio announcer, was among those who were missing. In July 1974 two women were approached at a Seattle state park by an attractive man who introduced himself as Ted. He asked them to help him with his sailboat but they refused. Later that day two other women were seen going off with him and were never seen alive again.

 

Bundy Moves to Utah: In the fall of 1974 Bundy enrolled in law school at the University of Utah and he moved to Salt Lake City. In November Carol DaRonch was attacked at a Utah mall by a man dressed as a police officer, but she managed to escape. She provided police with a description of the man, the VW he was driving, and a sample of his blood that got on her jacket during their struggle. Within a few hours after DaRonch was attacked, 17-year-old Debbie Kent disappeared.

A Grave Yard of Bones: Around this time hikers discovered a grave yard of bones in a Washington forest, later identified as belonging to missing women from both Washington and Utah. Investigators from both states communicated together and came up with a profile and composite sketch of the man named "Ted" who approached women for help, sometimes appearing helpless with a cast on his arm or crutches. They also had the description of his tan VW and his blood type which was type-O.

Profiles: Authorities compared the similarities of the women disappearing. They were all white, thin, and single and had long hair that was parted in the middle. They also vanished during the evening hours. The bodies of the dead women found in Utah had all been hit with a blunt object to the head, raped and sodomized. Authorities knew they were dealing with a serial killer who had the capability to travel from state to state.

Murders in Colorado: On January 12, 1975, Caryn Campbell vanished from a ski resort in Colorado while on vacation with her fiance and his two children. A month later Caryn's nude body was found lying a short distance from the road. An examination of her remains determined she had received violent blows to her skull. Over the next few months five more women were found dead in Colorado with similar contusions to their head, possibly a result of being hit with a crowbar.

In February, 2000 the sudden appearance of a rather strange painting with the accompanying title of "Haunted Painting" made it's debut on Ebay.com. Of course a title like this is going to attract attention and it's still discussed to this day whether the painting is genuinely haunted or not. Even stranger is the reactions that the general public had when viewing the photos of the painting.

The artist is Bill Stoneham, the painting title is "Hands Resist Him".

Bill tells of how he painted Hands Resist Him in 1972, the boy in the picture being himself, the hands being other lives, the windows/door being a thin veil between waking and dreaming with the small doll like girl being the guide through.

Bill does not know how his painting ended up abandoned as described by the Ebay.com seller, but he does know a gallery owner where the painting was originally displayed and sold at, and a Los Angeles Times critic, who reviewed the show, were both dead within one year of the painting being shown.

The reactions to viewing the painting are varied and strange, people report of feeling ill and passing out, having strange visitors in the night, children crying in horror when seeing the pictures and some people are even too afraid to look at the pictures.

The strange light on the painting as seen in the pictures displayed on Ebay.com. could have been achieved by various camera tricks or just by shining a red light on the painting. Very simply done. NO the painting is not genuinely haunted.

Hands Resist Him eventually sold for $1,025.00 - first bid was $199.00 - it had a total of 30 bids. I would imagine with the popularity of this painting that it would be worth a lot more now, not merely for its value as a painting but for its value as the now famous "Haunted Ebay Painting".

The Killing Spree Begins

The murder spree initiated by a man known only as The Zodiac, has to be one of the most intriguing criminal mysteries the United State has ever experienced.  No one is sure exactly when it began nor do we know when it will end.  All we do know is that for over 22 years, someone has managed to outwit the California authorities all the while taunting, goading, and ridiculing the police while he maintained his cycle of viscous killings, often within sight of the authorities that sought him.

The first victim of the Zodiac may have been Chen Jo Bates (18), a student at Riverside City's College.  Her body was found near the college library's parking lot.  The only evidence left at the scene were a Timex watch (with the time stopped at 12:23AM) and a partial palm print.  Other evidence soon arrived - delivered by the US Postal service.  A letter to the Riverside Police and the Riverside Enterprise newspaper arrived soon after the incident with no postage.

...I AM NOT SICK. I AM INSANE. BUT THAT WILL NOT STOP THE GAME. THIS LETTER SHOULD BE PUBLISHED FOR ALL TO READ IT. IT JUST MIGHT SAVE THAT GIRL IN THE ALLEY. BUT THAT'S UP TO YOU. IT WILL BE ON YOUR CONSCIENCE. NOT MINE. YES, I DID MAKE THAT CALL TO YOU ALSO. IT WAS JUST A WARNING. BEWARE...I AM STALKING YOUR GIRLS NOW.

Six months later a second letter arrived bearing the simple text "Bates had to die.  There will be more".  The only signature it contained was a single letter 'Z'...

On December 20, 1968, what some consider to be the first true Zodiac attack, occurred at Lake Herman Road in Vallejo (20 miles northeast of San Francisco).  A woman passer-by discovered two bodies lying in the middle of the road near a parked car.  Later identified as David Arthur Faraday (17) and Betty Lou Jensen (16), both were shot at close range, David while sitting in the car and Betty Lou as she tried to run away.  Witnesses recalled seeing a blue Valiant driving suspiciously up and down Lake Herman Road for about an hour...

 

Vallejo, California

About 7 months later, on July 5, 1969, the second attack occurred in Vallejo, California.  Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin (24) a local waitress, and Michael Renault Mageau were parked in their car when a blinding flashlight was shone in their faces.  A white male, 25-30 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall with a round face and brown wavy hair stealthily approached their vehicle and began firing.  Darelene was killed instantly but Michael survived and told of the callousness in which Zodiac calmly walked back to his car, heard Michael moaning, then promptly returned to fire 5 more shots at his victims.  This impassive behavior was further exhibited when the Zodiac began his relentless pursuit of recognition while tantalizing local Vallejo authorities with calls and letters.  The first phone call arrived minutes after the Ferrin and mageau shooting spree...

I wish to report a double murder. If you will go one mile east on Columbus Parkway to a public park, you will find the kids in a brown car. They have been shot by a nine-millimeter Luger. I also killed those kids last year. Good-bye

Police quickly tracked the originating number and promptly called it back.  The call came from a phone booth right around the corner from the Vallejo police station and practically across the street from Darlene Ferrin's home.  A passerby answered the ringing phone and informed the police that he had seen the man calmly lay the receiver down and drove off in a brown car.

This incident bore many bizarre characteristics that for some time, puzzled the local police.  They felt that Ferrin may have been stalked some time prior to her demise and some speculate she may have known her killer (was it a coincidence that the killer phoned from a booth across the street from Darlene's home).  Darlene was married, and not to Michael Mageau and close friends told of Darlene receiving a private phone call earlier that night.   

Michael's behavior was quite perplexing too.  At the scene, police were puzzled to find that Michael wore 3 pairs of pants, a long sleeved shirt, and 3 sweaters on a warm July night.  They also discovered that he had left his home in a hurry - the door was wide open and the TV left playing.

Police pondered whether she was having an affair with Michael or if she simply brought him along as protection in order to meet her perceived stalker in a hastily arranged rendezvous.  These questions may never be answered since Michael Mageau, the sole survivor, has since left the area and is living under an assumed name.

 

The Letter Campaign

On July 31, 1969 (possibly 08/01/1969), three of the area newspapers received mystifying letters.  The San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Chronicle, and Vallejo Times-Herald received letters stating:

Dear Editor

I am the killer of the 2 teenagers last Christmass at Lake Herman and the Girl last 4th of July. To Prove this I shall state some facts which only I+ the police know.

Christmass
1 Brand name of ammo Super X
2 10 shots fired
3 Boy was on back feet to car
4 Girl was lyeing on right side feet to west

4th of July
1 Girl was wearing patterned pants
2 Boy was also shot in knee
3 Brand name of ammo was Western

Here is a cyipher or that is part of one. The other 2 parts of this cipher have been mailed to the S.F. Examiner + the S.F. Chronicle. 

I want you to print this cipher on your frunt page by Fry Afternoon Aug 1-69, If you do not do this I will go on a kill rampage Fry night that will last the whole week end. I will cruse around and pick off all stray people or coupples that are alone then move on to kill some more untill I have killed over a dozen people over the weekend.

 

Each of the three letters were slightly different (the Vallejo version is shown above) but all stated precisely the same information.  Each of the letters included 1/3 of a cipher, indicating if all three were solved then the identity of the killer would be revealed.  The first letter (and first part of the cipher) was sent to the Vallejo Times-Herald and was marked with 4 stamps.  The second letter was sent to the San Francisco Examiner and had 3 stamps.  The 3rd letter was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle and had 2 stamps.  The number of stamps used on each envelope was apparently a clue to the encryption method used in the cipher.  Police did not discover this at first but it did not matter - a Alisal High School Teacher in Salinas broke the code and revealed the eerie message.

I like to kill people because it is so much fun. It is more fun than killing wild game in the forest, because man is the most dangerous animal of all. To kill something gives me the most thrilling experience. It is even better than sex. The best part will be when I die. I will be reborn in Paradise, and then all I have killed will become my slaves. I will not give you my name because you will try to slow or stop my collecting of slaves for my afterlife.

All three letters were signed with a Zodiac sign, a symbol representing the Zodiac, a celestial belt in space which encompasses 13 constellations.  Because of this, the police dubbed him the Zodiac, a name which the killer quickly took accustom to and began using in all subsequent communications.

Police questioned the authenticity of the first letter or at least they publicly stated that they had their doubts in order to pry more information out of the killer.  Either way, it worked.  3 days later another letter arrived from the killer, the first letter in which he actually addressed himself as the Zodiac.  This letter certainly convinced the police that they were dealing with the actual culprit and that they had a major problem on their hands.

Dear Editor, This is the Zodiac speaking. In answer to your asking for more details about the good times I have had in Vallejo, I shall be very happy to supply even more material. By the way, are the police having a good time with the code? If not, tell them to cheer up; when they do crack it, they will have me.

On the 4th of July: I did not open the car door. The window was rolled down all ready. The boy was origionaly sitting in the frunt seat when I began fireing. When I fired the first shot at his head, he leaped backwards at the same time, thus spoiling my aim. He ended up on the back seat then the floor in back thashing out very violently with his legs; that's how I shot him in the knee. I did not leave the cene of the killing with squealing tires + raceing engine as described in the Vallejo paper. I drove away quite slowly so as not to draw attention to my car. The man who told police that my car was brown was a negro about 40-45 rather shabbly dressed. I was in this phone booth having some fun with the Vallejo cop when he was walking by. When I hung the phone up the damn thing began to ring & that drew his attention to me + my car.

Last Christmass In that epasode the police were wondering how I could shoot + hit my victims in the dark. They did not openly state this, but implied this by saying it was a well lit night + I could see silowets on the horizon. Bull[censored] that area is srounded by high hills + trees. What I did was tape a small pencel flash light to the barrel of my gun. If you notice, in the center of the beam of light if you aim it at a wall or ceiling you will see a black or darck spot in the center of the circle of light about 3 to 6 inches across. When taped to a gun barrel, the bullet will strike in the center of the black dot in the light. All I had to do was spray them as if it was a water hose; there was no need to use the gun sights. I was not happy to see that I did not get front page coverage.

3 months later, on September 27, 1969, the Napa, California police department received a unsuspecting call.

I want to report a murder -- no, a double murder. They are two miles north of Park Headquarters. They were in a white Volkswagen Kharmann Ghia.

 

The Second Incident

When the operator asked the caller for his location he simply replied, "I'm the one that did it".

Police arrived on the scene to discover Cecilia Ann Shepherd and Bryan Harrnell, 2 students from Pacific Union College.  They were picnicking near Lake Verriesa (60 miles northeast of San Francisco) on a secluded shore of the lake.  Both were found in the parked car.  Cecillia died 2 days later of 24 stab wounds.  Bryan survived and was able to describe a "pudgy looking man wearing hood with slits for eyes and clip-on sunglasses."  The hood fell almost to his waste and had a Zodiac symbol stitched on the front of it.  Bryan stated that the man approached the vehicle claiming he was an escaped convict from Montana and that he desperately needed cash.  They talked for a while when the Zodiac suddenly stopped and exclaimed, "I'm going to have to stab you people".  The selflessness of the attack was apparent went police discovered that the wounds on Cecilia formed a definitive cross shape and that the Zodiac had calmly painted his 'symbol' on their car with a felt tip pen.

Less than 3 months later the third and final attack occurred.  Although this would be the last known attack, the relentless taunting continued for years after.  

 

The Terror Ends?

On October 11, 1969, Robert Stine (29), a San Francisco cab driver, picked up a fare at the corner of Mason and Geary Streets in Union Square.  His logged destination was Washington and Maple Streets in Presido Heights.  For some unknown reason, the cab did not stop at it's intended destination but rather stopped short at 3898 Washington Street where it joins with Cherry Street in the Nob Hill section of San Francisco.  Robert Stine was found dead, of a single gun shot wound to the head.  Witnesses told of a man wiping the cab clean and then walking calmly away.

In a bizarre and unfortunate twist, the first description the police received was of a black man.  As they sped towards the scene, they stopped a man walking up Cherry street to ask if he'd seen the suspect.  The man replied that he had indeed seen the black man running east up the road.  Police turned and gave chase and would later find out that the misinformation they'd just received came from Zodiac himself.

When police realized they had been duped, they turned back in an attempt to apprehend the elusive Zodiac who had just slipped through their grasp.  It is most likely that Zodiac escaped through the nearby park (a witness saw a man running through there).  The San Francisco PD publicly denied the incident but it was later collaborated individually by both of the officers.  The fact was also verified by Zodiac himself who would later reference the Paul Stine incident in many of his subsequent letters.

Up to this point, police only had partial palm and fingerprints, none of which matched anyone in their database.  There only clues were the letters and phone calls that seemed to indicate a man of sub-average intelligence.  At the beginning, police believed Zodiac to be an illiterate, a fact that they later countered when it became apparent that Zodiac had an extensive knowledge of math and chemistry.  Gleemed from some of the references he made in his letters, some even suggest that Zodiac had a much higher degree of education than anyone suspected. 

 

The Letter Campaign Continues

The next day, October 12, 1969, the San Francisco Chronicle received another letter from Zodiac with a shocking piece of evidence attached.  The letter began "Schoolchildren make good targets. I think I shall wipe out a school bus one morning some time. Just shoot out the tyres, then pick off the kiddies as they come bouncing out.".  A bloody fragment of Paul Stine's shirt was attached to the note.

Nine days later, on October 21, 1969, Zodiac phoned the Oakland police and stated that he would turn himself in if he could be represented by Melvin Belli and F. Lee Bailey (two famous lawyers).  He also insisted on obtaining on-air time on the Jim Dunbar show.  Police agreed and at 7:41AM the next day, Zodiac phoned the show and talked live with Melvin Belli.  Of course, the police traced the call but the elusive Zodiac had thought of everything.  During the course of the show, Zodiac would hang up and quickly call back from a total of 15 different locations.

In early November, another shorter letter was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle with double the necessary postage.  

This is the Zodiac speaking I though you would need a good laugh before you get the bad news you won't get the news for a while yet PS could you print this new cipher on your frunt page? I get awfully lonely when I am ignored, so lonely I could do my Thing!!!!!!

Still another letter was received on November 10, 1969 and in December of 1969, the attorney Melvin Belli received a Christmas card from Zodiac.

This is the Zodiac speaking I wish you a happy Christmass. The one thing I ask of you is this, please help me. I cannot reach out because of this thing in me won't let me. I am finding it extreamly dificult to keep in check I am afraid I will loose control again and take my nineth + posibly tenth victom. Please help me I am drownding...

 

The Finale

 Five additional letters were sent during 1970.  Another letter was sent in 1971 (signed with the Zodiac symbol and the number 17 followed by a plus sign).  Three letters were received in 1974 in which Zodiac indicated his body count had risen to 37.  Finally, on July 08, 1974, the last letter was sent postmarked in San Rafael, California.

All remained quiet until 16 years later when the New York Post received an odd letter that was postmarked in New York.  The letter described 4 recent unsolved murders supplying such graphic detail that only the true murderer would have known.  The letter ended with the chilling words:  "NYPD 0, Zodiac 9"...

Communications

The first Zodiac letter arrive types on a Royal typewriter.  Pages were torn off at the bottom to make them perfectly square.  All subsequent letters were hand-written.

Michael Renault Mageau

Some theorize that Mageau wore all the extra sets of clothing in order to make himself look larger in order to intimidate Darlene's mysterious stalker.

Number 13

The number 13 played a prominent part in the Zodiac mystery.  The atrological sing Zodiac represents 13 constellations.  A postcard was sent with 13 holes punched in it.  One of Zodiac's ciphers contained 13 symbols. Recent Zodiac Sightings? In 1970, a woman named Kathleen Jones reported an incident where a good Samaritan stopped to offer her assistance with a flat tire.  Instead of fixing the tire the man actually loosened all the lugs.  After she drove a short distance the wheel feel off at which time the man stopped again offering to give her a ride.  She agreed and found herself trapped in the car for hours while the man drove aimlessly around.  When she nervously asked if he always stopped to assist people he replied "after I've finished with them they don't need any help".  She bailed out of the car at a stop sign and promptly contacted the police.  When given sketches to assist in identification she swore the sketch of Zodiac was the man who stopped to help her.  When police returned her to her car they found it had been burned to the ground.

Introduction

Most people are familiar with Bram Stoker's infamous book - Dracula.  What you may not know is that Stoker's famous writing was based upon a real-life character.   Although Bram's Dracula was indeed quite forbidding, the real life Dracula is the epitaph of evil.

 The Dracul Family

The historical Dracul family begins with Basarab the Great (1310 - 1352) who ruled the province of Wallachia.  Wallachia is located in Romania, bordered by Transylvania to the north and Bulgaria to the South.

From here, history splinters itself.  We know that by the 1400's, the Basarab clan had split into two rival factions.  One was led by Prince Dan and the other by Prince Mircea the Old.  During these times battles amongst the rival families became quite bloody.  Assassination and massacres were the order of the day.

Prince Mircea the Old became known as Vlad I.  His son was known as Vlad Dracul II with the Dracul portion of his name being derived from the phrase 'son of the Dragon'.   Vlad Dracul II's son, born in 1431, inherited his father's name and was called Vlad Dracul III.  His name further expanded to Vlad Tepes which translated to English means Vlad the Impaler.  The shocking derivation of this name is noted below as Vlad Dracul III is the focus of our story.

 Vlad Dracul Tepes

Little is known of Vlad Dracul Tepes's family.  It is believed that his father died violently during war.  His brother, Mircea and younger brother, Radu also dies untimely deaths (it is rumored that Mircea was buried alive by his enemies).

In 1448, Vlad Dracul Tepes, whom we'll call Dracula from this point on, took over the thrown of Wallachia briefly.  Remember, during this time ownership of the thrown was not dictated by inheritance but rather by how effective you were in taking control by whatever means necessary.  After only 2 months in control, Dracula was forced to surrender the thrown to a man known as Vladislav II. Around 1456, Dracula regained his kingdom by killing Vladislav in bloody combat.

 Dracula's Rule

Dracula's primary rule extended from 1456 through 1462.  He ruled the land with a iron hand, believing that the only way to keep the civilians and merchants in line was to strike fear in their hearts.  Any acts of dishonesty by local merchants meant severe and painful death.  Not surprisingly, Dracula was respected by his subjects as a warrior and a stern ruler.

 The Horrors

Impalement was Dracula's favorite method of punishment.  Not only was this method of punishment extremely painful, but Dracula seemed to derive sick pleasure from watching his people being tortured.  In fact, wood cuttings from this time period indicate that Dracula often dined surrounded by the decaying bodies of the dead.

Impalement was initiated by by taking a oiled stake about as wide as a burly man's arm, and inserting it through the victims buttocks, often until it protruded from their mouths.   The stake was purposefully kept dull to keep the victims from dying too soon from shock.  The victims legs were tied to two horses while the stake was placed in position.  Upon command the horses slowly pulled the victim's legs until the stake was impaled into the victims body.  Mother's often had additional stakes driven through their chests with their children and infants impaled on the extended portion of the stake.  After the stakes were in place, they were driven into the ground and placed around the outside perimeter of Vlad's castle.  Bodies were left in these positions for months, the stench of rotting bodies permeating throughout the kingdom.

It was reported that the invading Turkish army turned back in horror when it encountered twenty thousand decaying corpses along the banks of the Danube river.   Their leader proclaiming "how could we possibly fight a monster that could do such atrocities".

Massive impalements such as the one the Turkish army stumbled upon, were by no means uncommon.  10,00 were impaled in the Transylvanian city of Sibiu.  on St. Bartholomew's Day, Dracula had 30,000 merchants impaled in the city of Brasov.

Although impalement seemed to provide sick pleasure for Dracula, it was not the only method of punishment utilized.  Reports indicate that tortures included nails in the head, cutting off of limbs, strangulation, burning, cutting off of noses and ears, mutilation of sexual organs, scalping, skinning, exposure to the elements or wild animals, and boiling alive.  No one was immune from these horrors - men, woman, children, lords and ambassadors from foreign powers were all reported to have died at the hands of Dracula.

 The End of the Era

Finally, in 1462 the Turks invaded Wallachia and overthrew Dracula.  He was imprisoned for 12 years during which time he somehow managed to father two sons.   During this time it was reported that he still practiced his favorite pastime.   He often captured mice and birds which he proceeded to torture and mutilate.   Some of these creatures were beheaded or tarred-and-feathered and released.   Most were impaled on tiny spears.

He was released in 1474 at which time he once again regained control of Wallachia.   He ruled for two years until 1476 when he was killed by the Turks.  It is rumored that he was decapitated by the Turks and his head sent to Constantnople where it was displayed on a stake as proof of his death.  He was reported buried in Snagov, an island monastery located near Bucharest.

 The Evidential Pamphlets

Much of the Dracula history comes from political pamphlets published in both Germany and Russia during the early 1500's.  The printing press had just been invented and apparently these types of stories served as entertainment for the persons of that era.   The German publications portrayed Dracula as a sinister, evil being.  The Russian writings, however, took a different view and indicated that Dracula was simply a ruler that got the job done.  Either way, historians note that both sides seem in agreement of the atrocities that were committed proving that these stories are certainly based upon truth.  Here are some of the stories as reported by the press of that era...

 The Golden Cup

Dracula was well know throughout the kingdom for his fierceness.  In a brazen and arrogant display of that fear, Dracula placed a golden cup in the center of the city,   Unprotected and openly displayed, it was known that anyone who stole the cup would be caught and punished in the most gruesome manner imaginable.  The cup remained unmolested throughout Dracula's 12 year reign.

 The Honest Merchant

A merchant from a foreign land once visited Dracula's castle proclaiming that someone had pilfered his cart.  The merchant was shocked to find that 160 golden ducats were missing.  Dracula soothed the poor man and assured him that the thief would be caught and his money would be recovered.  He then graciously insisted that the merchant spend the night in the castle.  Immediately, Dracula order soldiers to place 160 ducats plus 1 into the merchants cart.  When the merchant returned to his cart the next morning he counted his money and discovered that 161 ducats had been returned.   He went back to Dracula and told him that the money had been returned and in fact, the thief had added an extra ducat to the pot.  Meanwhile, the real thief had been caught and was order to be impaled.  Dracula informed the merchant of the true story of the return of his gold and indicated that if he had not reported the extra ducat, he would have been impaled alongside the thief.

 The Foreign Ambassadors

It has been reported that 2 ambassadors once visited the Dracula's kingdom.  Upon greeting the prince it was requested that they remove their hats.  They promptly explained that it was against their religion to remove their head coverings and refused to comply.  Dracula immediately had their hats nailed to their heads so that they might never have to break such an excellent tradition.

 Dracula's Mistress

The old pamphlets indicate that Dracula had a mistress that lived in the back streets of the city of Tirgoviste.  Dracula was often moody and depressed and the woman made every effort to bring Dracula out of his gloominess.  Once, when Dracula was in a particularly sorrowful state, she attempted to cheer him up by telling a a lie, proclaiming that she was pregnant with his child.  Dracula warned her not to lie about such a thing but she persisted to insist that she was with child.  When Dracula had the woman examined by bath matrons, he was angered to find that she had been dishonest with him.  He proceeded to draw his knife and cut her open from the groin to her breasts 'while proclaiming his desire for all the world to see where he had been'.   He then left the woman to die in agony.

 The Great Feast

On ST. Bartholomew's Day in 1459, Dracula held a great dinner for all the merchants and noblemen of the city.  In order that he might better enjoy his dinner, he order that the tables be set up and his guests join him for the feast amongst the forest of impaled corpses.  While dining, Dracula noticed that one of the nobles kept holding his nose to keep from being overcome by the stench.  Dracula then order his sensitive guest be impaled at the head of the table and that the stake be long enough to assure that his guest might be kept above the offending odors.

 The Burning of the Village People

Dracula was always concerned about the well being of the kingdom as a whole and insisted that every person contribute to the overall welfare by working diligently every day.  During part of his reign, he noticed that beggars and crippled persons had become numerous around the city.  He immediately sent out invitations to all these people inviting them to a grand feast and proclaiming that 'nobody should go hungry in his land'.  The guests were treated to a grand dinner at which Dracula himself made an appearance.  "What else do you desire? Do you want to be without cares and lacking nothing in this world?" the prince inquired.  When all responded loudly, Dracula had the hall border up and set afire.  All perished in the blaze and Dracula proclaimed that no one would be poor in his realm.

Introduction

Nostradamus, (or Notradamus) the sixteenth century physician turned seer, supposedly foresaw the French and Russian Revolutions, the career and death of Hitler, the rise of Arab power in the 1970's, the attempted assassination of the pope, and scores of other specific events. The most amazing aspect of his prophecies was not the events themselves but the accuracy of his descriptions, most often giving the exact names of people and places, the exact dates, and the unforeseen results of the event's affect on their societies.

 

The Prophecies Begin

Nostradamus was born in Provence on December 14, 1503. After receiving his doctoral degree in 1525, he began to practice medicine as a 'healer'. When in 1540, Nostradamus was unable to save his wife and children from a unforeseen plague, he began roaming the countryside surrounding Salon. It was at this time that he began writing a yearly list of predictions that at once became very popular with the poeple.  Due to this success, Nostradamus began writing his book - Centuries, a complete series of prophecies dealing with events from his time to the end of the world in the year 3797. The prophecies were written in 'quatrains' or verses of four lines and lumped together in groups called 'centuries'. Their meanings were purposely obscured using jumbled text and slight metaphors in order to prevent his being labeled a product of the devil.

 

Fame and Fortune

Nonetheless, his work became known and his fame spread to the royal court where the queen summoned him to plot the horoscopes of the king and their children. Soon, people from all over France began seeking the new prophet to solicit predictions of their future. He quickly became quite a draw with his eerie ability to plot the future, even the short term future.

 

Famous Tales

It was said that while walking the countryside with the Monsieur de Florenville, they came upon a black pig and a white pig. The Monsieur de Florenville questioned Nostradamus on the fate of the pigs. Nostradamus quickly replied, 'We will eat the black one and the wolf will eat the white one'. The Monsieur de Florenville, being boldly jealous of Nostradamus, quickly set out to make him a liar. The lord ordered the chef to roast the white pig on the spit and serve it for their dinner. When dinner arrived and the roasted pig was about to be served, the Monsieur once again asked Nostradamus about the fate of the pigs. Nostradamus, once again replied what he had earlier stated, 'they would eat the black pig and the wolf ate the white one'. Then the Monsieur summoned the chef to refute Nostradamus's statement. The guests were astonished when the chef admitted that a tame wolf cub had nibbled at the white pig while it was roasting on the spit and that he had served them the black one instead.

 

Proof - Hitler's Rise and Fall

Were the predictions of Nostradamus simply guesswork as some have surmised or was he truly a the greatest prophet the world has ever known? In his predictions of Hitler's rise Nostradamus wrote (notations italicized):

In the most easterly region of western Europe, a child will be born to poor parents [Hitler's parents were indeed poor, born in Austro-Bavarians frontier]. He will seduce great crowds wit his oratory and will [commonly characterized as the greatest orator in history] make much more noise about the eastern power - USSR [Hitler's greatest adversary]. A new sect of philosophers despising death, gold, honors and wealth will be born on the German borders and those who follow them will have support and audience [Hitler's founding party held these very beliefs and sought to deliver the German people from their sorrows]. Under the saintly appearance of delivering people from servitude he will himself usurp the people's power and the town. He will wreak the worst by trickery with the aid of a new republic, using as text in the struggle the false ideas of the first part of his book [Mein Kampf, Volume 1]. Many will die before the Phoenix dies [millions of Jews perished]. After fifty-five years ten months he will find his last home, when the years 1915, 1921, and 1939 have passed [Hitler born April 1889, died March 1945 at 55 years 10 months] in 1945. In 1915 he will succumb to illness [as a Corporal he was twice wounded in 1915], in 1921 he will have an armed force dangerous to his life [1921, the most successful year of Hitler's new party]; 1939 will be subject to a rain of fire [Hitler's siege began in 1934 and ended in 1945]. The new Nero will hurl into three ovens [Auschwitz, Dachau, and Birkenau where over 11 million Jews perished] young people to burn them alive. Happy they who are far from such acts. Three of his blood Germans will spy on him to kill him [Goerdeler, Leipzig, and General Beck attempted a assassination by bomb that failed]. The new German empire will be in desolation and undergo changed because of the North [USSR, key in the defeat of Germany]. There will be great numbers of condemned person when the heads of state are reconciled [Nuremberg Trials]. But one of them will make sure any difficulties that those who waged war together will not be allies [USSR and USA, allies in wars, starkest enemies in the end].

 

The World Trade Center Disaster

The World Trade Center disaster that occurred on September 11, 2001 generated a lot of questions about its supposed prediction by Nostradamus.  Three quatrains in particular generated interest:

Century 10, Quatrain72:
The year 1999, seventh month,
From the sky will come a great King of Terror,
To bring back to life the great King of the Mongols,
Before and after Mars will reign at will

In the above quatrain, many point out that the year '1999' and the 'seventh month' are incorrect?  Some rectify this by explaining that our modern calendar is indeed off by two years due to the Pope's revision of our contemporary calendar.  Also, the 7th month could indeed refer to September.  400 years ago, Nostradamus's calendar actually began with the month of March (hence the reason many of the prefixes of our months don't make sense to us - October, Octa, 8, or December, Deca, 10, and most interestingly September, Septa, or 7.

Some point out that the 'King of the Mongols' could refer to the United States since we are often perceived negatively by other countries.

And note that 'Mars' in most of Nostradamus's writings refer to War (the God of Mars).

Century 6, Quatrain 97:
The sky will burn at 45 degrees latitude,
Fire approaches the great new city,
Immediately a huge, scattered flame leaps up,
When they want to have verification from the Normans

In the above quatrain many have argued over the '45 degrees' value specified.  Some argue that 45 degrees refers to the angle of the plane upon entry into the World Trade Center (WTC).  Some argue that Manhattan lies right around 45 degrees latitude (more accurately, 41 degrees).

Also pointed out is the phrase Normans which, true to Nostradamus's style of writing, could refer to Americans (NOrth AMericANS).  Then again it could be deduced as a referral to Norman Rockefeller by the skeptics...

Century 1, Quatrain 87:
Earthshaking fire from the center of the world,
Will cause the towers around the new city to shake,
Two great rocks will war for a long time,
And then Arethusa shall color a new river red

And of course the above quatrain is quite eerie too.  New York, and more specifically the World Trade Centers, could be referred to the Center of the World.  'New City' could refer explicitly to New York.  The 'two great rocks' could refer to the twin WTC towers.  And the coloring of the Hudson river (which the dead bodies are being transferred over to be place in nearby New Jersey) could indeed be surmised as 'red'.

Whether or not these predictions are accurate is of course, open to debate.  Vague? Of course.  Accurate in some cases? Yes.  If you want to believe then you can have a lot of fun with Nostradamus's predictions but be forewarned that you'll need to dig through several references because interpretations vary greatly.  If you're a skeptic then you will also have a lot of fun pointing out the inaccuracies of some of the predictions.

 

Either way, some of the predictions are eerily accurate indeed. So what does Nostradamus predict for our future? Like our modern day bibles, Notradamus foresees the rise of an Antichrist (the son of a Buddhist Monk, and a twin) and a great war that ends western civilization. Hopefully Nostradamus's prophecies were just blind luck...

 

 

World Trade Center and the Twin Brothers?

Nostradamus wrote: "In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers will be torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb The third big war will begin when the big city is burning" Nostradams - 1654 Sounds eerie enough - right?  Problem is Nostradamus didn't write it.  First note the date - 1654.  That's a hundred years after Nostradamus's time.  The above written passage was actually penned by a student, Neil Marshall (welcome to the history books Mr. Marshall) at Brock University in Canada in the 90's to demonstrate how vague passages of writing could be attributed to many various events. As for Mr. Marshall's next prediction: "The Denver Broncos will win the next Superbowl"...

Need more to chew on?

Here are some interpretations taken from a translation made over 20 years ago (see references at the bottom of this page).  They're old but seem strangely applicable to our modern day climate: C1, Q94 The tyrant will be put to death in the Muslem port, but that does not bring back freedom.  A new war breaks out, through spite and vengeance; the Republic will be paid in fear, through force. C2, Q95 Peopled areas will be made uninhabitable (nuclear fallout?) for very divided territories (Palestine?). The powers will be given over to incapable governments. Death and dissension will reign between brothers (Arab and Jew?). C2, Q60 Muslim duplicity will provoke a split in the Middle East. Because of a great person on the Jewish side, the Rhone will see changes when the greed for gold (U.S.?) has died down, the fleet will be engulfed, blood and sailor's bodies will be floating. To see the sky weep prompts a wail of sorrow.  The war fleets prepare. The Moslem leader plans his tricks. The army will delay mobilizing because no one will know what is secretly brewing, and during that time people will be enjoying themselves. C3, Q90 The great cynical person from the Tigris and Iran will make a gift to those of the Atlantic Alliance; then a military leader will leave from Afghanistan (Osama bin Laden?) to land in the Tyrrhenian Sea and Marseille. C2, Q91 In the East a great fire will be seen, noise and flames (of war?) will extend across Russia. There will be deaths within a circle (nuclear bombs?) and cries will be heard. By war, fire, famine, men will wait for death. C8, Q73 The Muslim troops will smite the great leader, whose death, unjustly, will not be far off; the avarice of the mother will be the cause of this event. Conspirator and seat of power alike will be greatly stricken. C3, Q95 The Muslim law will be seen to collapse, following another far more seductive law (Christianity?). Russia will collapse first (split of the U.S.S.R?) and be drawn by the benefits of the language. At the approach of the Aquarian Age, the devil will turn back, and he will be given obstacles where the fire of the great war is concerned. From Russia to the Muslim countries the great proud one (USA?) will rule, and the West will maintain freedom of thought. C5, Q80 The eloquent person will approach great Turkey, the Muslim alliance will be beaten; of the two Moslem laws one will be abandoned; there will be continual upheavals between Muslim's and the rest. C4, Q14 The sudden death of the chief of state will cause a change and put another in power, one who has come both early and late, so young despite his ancient descent that he must be feared by land and sea.

Great Reciepe

Ingredients:

1 cup of butter, 1 cup of sugar, 4 large eggs, 1 cup dried fruit, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 tsp soda, 1 tsp salt, lemon juice, brown sugar, 1 or 2 quarts whiskey, nuts.

Before you start, sample the whiskey to check for quality. Good huh?

Select a large mixing bow, measureing cup, etc.

Check the whiskey again to make sure it's just right and not losing out to evaporation.

To be sure the whiskey is of the highest quality, pour one level cup into a large, drinking glass and drink as fast as you can.

Repeat.

With an alectric mixer, beat one cup of butter in a large, fluffly bowl. Add 1 tsp. thugar and beat again.

Meanwhile, make sure the whickey is of the finest quality, cry another tup. Open second quart is necessary.

Add 2 large eggs, 2 c. fried druit and beat till high. If druit gets stuck in beaters just pry it loose with a drewdriver.

Sample the whitkey agian, checking for consicicticity, then sift 3 c. of salt or anything,it really doesn't matter.

Sample the whickey.

Sift 1/2 pint of lemeon juce. Fold in chopped butter and strained nuts. Add 1 bobblespoon brown thrgar, or whaever color you can find and mix well. Grease oven and turn cake pan to 350. now pur the hole mess in coven and ak for 1 tmr by our.
