Edward Curtis, Bear's Belly, Arikara, 1909, 18" x 14", Pigment Print

Bear's Belly was born in 1847 at Fort Clark in what is now North Dakota.

When I Saw this picture...I saw "power"...

*****

then I saw this question....

A question a Cree had once pointedly ask,

"What do stories do when they are not being told?"

A very good question...Stories untold can get lost in antiquity or changed according to the teller...Bear's Belly does look ver determined and powerful...

Oh my. Yes what do they do?
The native peoples of our lands were amazing with the stories they told but I`m afraid, here at least, that they arenot being told any more.
